Manual 5th gear: WASTE of metal! Am I right?

2018 Manual Fit. Why bother with 6 gears? 6 spins too high, and 5th is too close to 6, I skip 5th ALL THE TIME. 3rd > 4th > 6th.

Actually, now it's mostly 3rd to 6th, unless racing for some reason. Just don't need 5th, ever. At all. Never.

Am I right? You know I'm right.

I sometimes leave it in 5th and forget I have a 6th gear

ALSO, while in 6th, sometimes I forget and think I'm still in 4th gear

TL;DR = agreed, screw our horrible 6th gear

I find myself using 5th on the highway when there is light traffic and I need to brake and accelerate a bit while 6th is reserved for wide open road.

The gears are still definitely too close. I wonder how difficult it would be for a shop to change 5th to 6th, like with previous gens, and extend 6th a bit. In Texas, there are some places where the speed limit is 75-80 and I feel 6th is running at too high an RPM at that speed.

2018 EX MT, all the gears are too close to me. Yall (hey, I am from Texas) do a lot more shifting than I do. I usually shift 1st, 3rd, and then 6th. Sometimes, I get lazy and start in 2nd and then 6th. I am not a fast driver or in a hurry.

Gears are so close, you can skip one or two and hardly know it.

When upshifting I tend to go through all the gears, but downshifting I usually skip gears.

I go 1,2,3,4 then to 6th upshifting. The only time 5th gets used is if I need a little more to pass on the highway then I might downshift from 6th to 5th.

I always skip gears. 1>2>4>6 or 1>2>3>6.

In the Fit it was just 1>2>3>5.

I don't see it as lazy just more efficient. Maybe less wear on the clutch too.

love this!

never tried down to 5 for more power, 5 and 6 are so close. I think I usually drop to 4th for power if RPMs aren't too high for it.
when I drop 2 on motorcycle, people thought I was running a turbo on it... same thing

I only had 5 gears but she didn't have enough power to not have to down shift. 3rd if I had some RPM left but 4th would work.

I am so lazy efficient I usually pop the car out of gear without pressing the clutch when I come up to a red light.

I used to skips gears upshifting in all of my previous cars depending on conditions.

And if I felt brave, I'd skip gears downshifting only for track days.

I'll rant as well - it is all about the design requirements that car companies fixate on - one is perceived passing power and acceleration in top gear. For some reason on MTs most car companies opt to select a top gear ratio for passing power over economy and NVH (noise vibration and harshness). Honda has been doing that for a loooooooong time on their motorcycles (5th gear is geared for passing power on a 5 gear; now 6th gear is the same with a close 5th). I was shocked when the GK's 6th gear was selected to be high - leaving our GKs with higher NVH on the highway and lower than achievable fuel economy.

The solution to getting everything we want is a better 6th gear and having to shift more often - if you want passing power you stay in 5th and if you want low NVH and fuel economy 6th should be geared for that and would require you to downshift.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand there isn't any off-the-shelf solutions (out of warranty) for a different transmission with a tall 6th gear for the Fit like there would be for a Ford Coyote motor.

I did a 3 hour trip recently, and was happily surprised milage was in the 35 to 40 range in 6th at 70mph. I can live with that. Just seems higher revved than my Auto Fit was

The CVT GK Fit has a significant reduction at the tallest band by at least 1000 rpm at 70 mph.

Can you even get a manual Fit anymore? The last one I saw was the one I bought back in ‘15, and the dealer had to get it from another dealer 200 miles away. I haven’t seen another GK manual in four years.
