Anyone with steering wheel noise?
Anyone with steering wheel noise?
This is my first post here. Hello.
Mine is a 2019 Fit EX. The steering wheel when moving slow and turning sharp has started making what sounds like a plastic rubbing sound.
The dealership said it’s my clock spring wearing as it should, the noise is normal and usually it starts at like 100 miles. They said it wouldn’t help to replace the clock spring, I’m under warranty, as it would just come right back. So they said they put some lube on it yesterday. They said it won’t help because the noise will still come back but it won’t get any worse. And…today the noise…is back.
Does any of you Fit owners have this plasticky noise when you turn sharp?
Thank you

Welcome. Never heard this one before. Sounds like the dealership is trying to minimize and deflect. The clock spring shouldn't be making noises, but the dealership might not know how to fix it, hence the deflection.
I'd do an end around and appeal to Honda corporate. Since you're still under warranty, you have a better chance of getting a remedy from them rather than relying on the word of one dealership.

that needs to be addressed , definitely write to corporate , and i'd let the dealership know about it . a clock spring making noise is a sign of a bad clock spring . and
a bad clock spring is a safety issue

You have the record that you presented this issue to the dealer, so it should be covered later in time.. My suggestion is let it be for the time being. I know the noise can be annoying. Having the dealer replace the "spring" which probably requires pulling the steering wheel, messing with the contacts and the air bag is not something you want to dealer to work on at this time, especially when they are reluctant. I hope the issue goes away in time..

I’m getting conflicting information. I did call corporate and have a case # now. They will contact me with a Honda representative.
on another forum someone replied that the clock spring noise is widely the case across the Honda car lineup and the dealer is correct in that the noise will come back if the replace it.
I do agree that if they are forced to replace it, they may very well screw something up

We know what the problem areas with the GK5 are, in no particular order: 1. Fuel injector / rail assembly premature failure. 2. Starters and start switches on pushbutton start models prone to premature failure. 3. VTC actuator premature failure. 4. Fuel pump recall on later models. 5. Door, sunroof and hatch leaks on '18+ models.
So if it's a known problem, it hasn't been reported here yet. I like to keep an open mind, so maybe this is the just the first report here, but I wonder if this is a recent supply chain issue if it's affecting other Honda models which are more popular. In other words, the number of Fits sold compared to Accords & CR-Vs is nominal, so maybe we wouldn't hear about it until enough recently affected Fits got into circulation.

I had a 2012 Fit with more miles than this 2019 Fit, and I didn’t hear a plastic rubbing noise in the steering wheel when turning sharp and slow. The service advisor said he was surprised it took so long cause it normally happens after only 200 miles no and the Accords all do the same thing.
My 2019 Fit, as you probably know, was the last year for the Fit in the USA.
Functionally, he said the clock spring is fine. Maybe it isn’t even the clock spring. I don’t think the clock spring is making the noise. It sort of sounds like the plastic behind the steering wheel is being compressed and rubbing together.

Mine started making the noise a few weeks ago. Makes a sort of creaking noise when returning the wheel to a neutral position from full turn about 1/4 through the first rotation. I assumed it was the decreasing temperatures but I'll be keeping an eye on it.
What year is yours? Mine does it turning sharp like in and out of parking spaces and moving slow. Honda has a claim on my complaint. I’ll tell you what’s said.
Mine is a 2018. I hadn’t even paid any mind to it; like I said, I thought it was the cold temperatures as it just started making noise recently. Will have to talk to Honda about it now if it’s something that is becoming a complaint among other owners. Hope they’re willing to rectify your issue.
I've had my 2020 sport for a year now and it's been making this noise since I got it. I bought it new and thought maybe it needs to break in but it's still making the creaking noise and its very annoying. It's noticeable in the colder temperatures and almost disappears in the summer. I never took it to the dealer because like I said, I thought it'd go away on its own. I'd like to hear what they say about yours.
I've also starting noticing this problem. I have a 18 EX. Started a couple months ago, and like mentioned above, I thought it was maybe the cooler weather. I checked my tire pressure, and they were a low due to the lowering temps. Corrected the tire pressure, and the squeak went away for a bit. So, I thought it was my tires squeaking and not my steering wheel. But, then it came back. I have this car for 4 years, and it's just now starting.
Can't wait to see what Honda says, and if there's any solutions

Talked to Honda
I talked to Honda customer service finally. They said there’s nothing the corporate offfice can do. He said to take it back to the dealership again or try another dealership. He said if they told me the noise would come back if they replaced the clock spring, which they did, then they should know. They were no help. So I will try a different Honda dealership and see what they say. I’m sure if I complain enough, they’ll have to replace it under warranty, but who wants to be forced to fix something. And they’d be in the dash with all the wires and such. I’ll still get the second opinion.
Thanks for reporting back. As we get more info, we can add it to the list of problem areas.
Since this is a potential safety issue, I'm bummed that corporate completely dropped the ball in response to your inquiry. Does one of these puppies actually have to fail before they investigate?

wow that is super disappointing. hopefully the different dealer will take care of you. If no luck there, you may be able to bring it to a local shop, tell em your story, and maybe they'll look at it for free for ya
