I’ll definitely report back with anything that comes from the second opinion

Has anyone just, pulled the cover off the bottom of the dash, and spraying some WD-40 on the steering column joints? Is that a crazy/bad idea for some reason?

Steering rack failure

2016 EX-L Navi
Probably not related to your problem, but i had a steering rack defect that manifested as a knocking sound when steering. Got progressively louder as time passed. I thought it was initially something suspension/control arm related.

Nope. The splined input shaft was for whatever reason rusting from the inside out. Had I left it any longer the thing would have completely failed on me. The knocking sound was apparently coming from the internals of the steering assembly. Sketchy, to say the least.

The shop I took it to called around to see what the heck was happening (other dealerships, Honda Canada, and other Honda specific shops), but nobody had any idea. The shop and I believe this was defective since new. Honda Canada wouldn’t cover me so I had to pay close to $3000 (Canadian pesos) for the repair.

Update

I got the second opinion at a different Honda dealership. After about an hour wait, he said I’m all done and it’s no charge. They said the horn cover as sticking up too high and was rubbing when I turned sharp. They adjusted some pins and lubricated. It is fine now with no noise.

I mentioned I was afraid it was the clock spring. He said no, it is not.

So basically my dealership gave me a weirdly incorrect diagnosis with no solution to fixing the noise saying the clock spring caused it and can’t be fixed even if it gets replaced.

Im probably going to stop taking the car to this dealership even though I bought the car there.

the horn cover? Isn't the horn more towards the center, and in front of the radiator?

I meant the plastic cover on the center of the steering wheel where the airbag would push through was stuck out too much. When I turned the steering wheel it rubbed when it was turned sharp.

Any tips on a DIY for this? My noise hasn’t returned since disappearing about two weeks ago, but if it’s this simple of a fix I’ll be willing to open the wheel and see if there’s any rub.
