Plastic Piece Dangling from Undercarriage
Plastic Piece Dangling from Undercarriage
Hi, I live in a snowy part of the world and own a 2015 FIT. A few days ago, I essentially had no choice but to drive through deep snow. Immediately afterward, I heard a distinct "scraping/ dragging" noise strongly suggestive of something having been partially broken off the undercarriage and then dragging on the street. On examination, I can see a sort of panel of black plastic-y looking stuff fallen down so that it drags. Of course, this panel is still connected at one end; otherwise, it would have come completely off. Obviously, again, the way the piece has come loose is such that the end that drags is to the rear - otherwise, I am sure the part would be torn off as the "leading" edge of the panel encountered any discontinuity in the road surface. No other apparent problems. This panel appears to align with the front axle and it appears to be located on the mid-right side. Any thoughts as to what this might be? I am 99% sure I should get it checked out (I do not have a garage or any other personal means by which to get at the underside of the car).
If memory serves me right this undercarriage panel is held on in the front with machine screws and in the back of it with several plastic push pins which not uncommonly fail. I believe this is the panel which has to be removed for oil changes and the chances are that wherever you get your oil changes done they just slap on the old push pins rather than replacing them with new ones. That being the case failure which you experienced is inevitable because these plastic fasteners shouldn't be re-used.
The car has to be jacked up and new fasteners put in. It's a simple job but the hourly labour rate might be painful and places like Honda will soak you for the fasteners,

Lots of us use zip ties to secure these things. It's not complicated but you will have to find a way to get under the car. I use two rhino ramps for the front wheels (and just to be super-safe I stick a pile of stacked wood under the jack points.
I've had mine refastened twice, once for $20.00, and another time for $30.00. both times by independent mechanics.
I had the bigger underbelly pan refastened once for $40.00. Honda wanted $720.00 to replace the pan!
All three times because of unavoidable deepish water. Several people here have removed the front pan entirely.
