I just received a $62 Start/Stop button, and once again, it's a Chinese knockoff from eBay. I had high hopes because it was described as being OEM, and the sample on eBay showed "Honda" molded into the side of the button. It took over two weeks to get here from China, with a return address in Jamaica, NY.
The button was presented more professionally, sealed inside a plastic bag with a Honda label, "Made in Japan." When I opened the bag, I saw a button exactly like the first one I received in May for $46. I returned that for a refund, which is what I'll do with this one.
Now I have to decide what to do. The dash is still apart, with the button sticking out. I can put it all back together and hope the cleaned contacts keep working for another 100,000 miles, or I can buy a new Honda button online for about $150. I'm not going to do anything until I get the car inspected on July 1. Then I'm going to remove the instrument cluster and resolder those bad connections.
What would you do - but a new switch from Honda or trust that the cleaned contacts will stay clean for a while? Another option is to remove those plastic spring tabs from the button so I can slide it out without spending an hour taking the dash apart.
If you have fixed the problem (temporarily or permanently, TBD), you now know how to do the job, and you have a plan to make it easier in the future, I know which option I would take.
