VTEC Crossover Point?

What is the VTEC threshold/crossover point in the new EarthDreams engine, and what speed would this equate to with a 6MT? On my old Civic HX CVT, the crossover is about 2650 rpm, which equals about 67 mph. During local commute, I can keep it below the VTEC point and get 40 mpg, but on the Interstate doing 75 mph, I lose 3 - 4 mpg due to the higher cam profile (plus wind resistance, etc).

I'm hoping that the new engine and 6MT can at least get up to cruising speed (60) without hitting the VTEC point.

I wouldn't imagine it would be much different, but on my 2nd Gen GE8 the crossover point is right around 5,300 RPM. I can clearly hear the change with the DIY short ram intake. You have to either have it in sport shift mode (A/T) or basically have throttle floored to get above the crossover point. In normal relaxed driving it never hits it.

In i-VTEC the cross over point for the engine is variable based on throttle position but yes at full throttle the vtec low/hi cam change is at 5300 rpm. I need to get an intake bad because hearing/feeling VTEC is music to my ears and its a powerful motor for its size. Has a lot of similarities to the D16y8 of the 90's model Civic EX's.

I thought the newer VTECs were dynamic?

Wow! Hadn't thought about that. Then I guess it's dependent on the sensed load on the engine at a given speed combined with sensed throttle position. That should work well (in theory)!

5500rpm

Looking through a datalog file I did with the KTuner software, there is an option to watch the 'Cam Angle'. During full throttle operation, I notice the cam angle will jump high after initial full throttle, then taper lower as the rpms climb.

Once the rpm hits 5500rpm, the cam angle jumps up again before tapering off. So, if this jump I am seeing is the 'Vtec-Kicking-In-Yo' point, then I'll conclusively say this is the Vtec switch-over point.

This is cool to know. Never really heard about this before.

I bought my car because it's purple.

And fuel cuts back in at about 1500-1750 RPM, for those of us with manual transmissions.

Truthfully I miss my PRM....it sounded great and screamed but after awhile I got tired of it roaring while a 96 taurus was right next me barely making noise.

Maybe I'll resort to a DIY in the near future as I start to drive the car less and less.....

Cool! I bought mine because it's yellow. Great minds think alike!
