Crash Test News

SorryFFs, if this is already posted, but this came across my desktop today,

In this story according to Consumer Reports the 2015 FIT won Top Saftey Pick in crash tests.

Here's hoping that it never happens, but it's good to know that the safty factor is built in to our beloved FITs!

Interesting! It went from bad to the top just like that. Honda knew exactly what to do and they corrected it.

The sales guy at Honda told us that Honda had pulled the 2014 model of FIT because of the Small Overlap crash test - they wanted to rework it to stay in the TSP category - which, he claimed, the car WAS in for the other tests.

Pity that they didn't go for the highest "good" rating. They engineered the structure for an "acceptable" rating, didn't quite make it, then added some welds to put raise it one level.

Not what I expect from Honda engineering.

I don't believe a "good" rating for a car in this size class is possible with the price and weight constraints. Maybe when carbon fiber becomes much less expensive. Not one other small car has better than a marginal rating save the Spark in this test. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong with the net generation of new small cars.

Even mid-size cars and SUVs fail small frontal off-set. It's a new test that many manufacturers never considered engineering for.

But Honda said that they would engineer for it:

the Fit is anticipated to earn top safety scores from NHTSA and IIHS, including a NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score and a TOP SAFETY PICK rating with a GOOD rating in all IIHS test modes, including the rigorous small overlap barrier test.

1. 2014 FORD Fiesta got a "marginal rating"

2. 2014 Buick Encore (SUV) got a Poor rating. 2015 coming out, no change

The bumper was engineered to work, and ultimately did. It was the weld that did not survive. In fact, it may have been just "that weld" that failed. Perhaps the next weld would have held. I can't help but think Honda crashed a few of these themselves, thinking they had the problem licked. They may have been just as surprised as anyone else the day of the test. The reinforced weld solution may just be a precautionary measure against a problem that has only a very slight chance of reoccurring. However, better safe than sorry. I appreciate the fact they will be offering the weld reinforcement to everyone who has purchased the 2015 Fit, and not just those made after June 9, 2014.
