I made the base from 3/4" plywood after making a template with some kraft paper. Then I just fussed with it - eased all the edges, sanded the whole thing, did some fine shaping - to make it fit really well without being too tight. The next step involved figuring out the placement of each of the fork mounts, and creating blocks for each that match the slope that's created when you turn the fork nearly 90 degrees to the frame. All fun stuff for me.

Also, we recently took a road trip with three of us in the car and one road bike, and had plenty of room for the rear passenger as well as all our luggage, etc.

Finally got around to trying to fit my bike inside. With the front tire removed it's just a couple of inches too high to stand up. I ride pretty high, so others may be able to stand theirs up with no issues. I'll have to lower the saddle to fit it, but that'll be ok. Bought a couple of fork mounts on Amazon for $13.41 each. So, when my wife and I both go biking, I will be able to stand 2 bikes. When it's only me, I'll just lay it in the back, that'll be the quickest and easiest. Now, I'll have to figure out a way to make this look half as good as dbhazz's setup.

The other con to using a hitch rack is that if it rains (or drive through any water at all!) you can end up with a very dirty bicycle!

Of course, on top you have the bug issue. You wouldn't think that bugs would hit a bicycle, but they do!

My recumbent should fit inside fine!

I have fit three bikes inside the fit with three people, with the "60" rear seat folded down.
rear of the bikes forward, front tires removed.

Albeit, it was one 54, a 47, and a size 35. I dont think I would have been able to fit more than two if it were two 54ish sized bikes (with only 1 seat down).
I built a stand for about $10, it is a piece of wood with two fork mounts on it. Keeps the bikes stable while moving.

The 54 also required me to tilt the bike sideways while putting it in, otherwise the saddle would not clear the headliner (but it can stand up once its further in, the saddle occupies the space where a head might be).

3 bikes and 3 people, very nice! That is one advantage to having a smaller frame. Mines 58cm, and coupled with the high saddle, I don't have a choice but to either lower the saddle or remove it completely. I'm envious.

Has anyone been able to mount a 29er mountain bike upright on a fork mount inside the GK Fit? Mine is medium 17" 29er, I'm guessing it'll fit.

Yes. I do just that with a large framed 29er.

I think there are some pictures on MTBR of this.

Can't be answered with a blanket statement....yes, small framed bikes for shorter riders can probably fit just fine ....large framed for tall riders, not likely without at least lowering the seatpost. Haven't tried fitting mine in upright, I just pull the wheels and lay it down, only takes a minute to take 'em off and put 'em back on, done it that way all my life

I bought a fit specifically to put my 54" road bike in the back with the front wheel off. I'm 5'8" 1/2 but have long legs. I took to bike to the dealer and played with a ex with the sunroof and the seat just clears. I'm working on a custom mount. When I'm done I'll do a detailed post.

How about a 29er and a road bike next to each other, both upright on fork mounts with the front wheels removed? Anyone able to make this work?
