40 mpg - plus

I know there are other threads for this, but...

I drove my new 2015 Fit LX from CO to WI two days ago. 40.7 mpg reading (and I know that is probably higher than it really was by a few mpg due to the Fit's tendency to overcalculate).

It was into a driving Iowa wind for about one-eighth of the trip, so I can't really complain!

Can't complain at all. Depending on hills and speed, (75 here), I get around 44 mpg actual. Funny thing. In town, the car's calculator is always optimistic. On the highway, it is close to dead on. Gotta love these cars. 8,500 miles on it, and Mobile One. MPG getting a little better.

That driving Iowa wind would be your best friend if it were a tailwind.

Awesome! Just bought the car yesterday so I have not had the opportunity to hit that 40+ reading yet, but I'm extremely hopeful!

Just took my LX manual on its first real road trip yesterday- 250 miles from Los Angeles to Fresno. There's some steep grades along with flat stretches and averaged 45mpg. I was very pleased and astonished

What was your average speed? Any tips on how to achieve it?

I did have some hypermilling techniques but nothing tricky. Basically, I stayed at the posted speed limit the entire way, which was 65mpg for the first 90 miles (and the hilly section, gaining 4,000 ft), 70mph for the next 25 miles, and then was 55 mph on some of the back roads for the next 120 miles or so (including more mountain grades along the foothills of the Sierras). I did stay in 5-6th gear as much as possible (but still downshifted even to third on stretches of hills). The biggest trick I had was allowing the car to roll in neutral on the downhill sections.

Basically, I didn't drive aggressively and just followed the law

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try it. My fit is coming tomorrow and I can't way to drive it and get away for the inefficiency of the ram 2500 5.7 liters.

On the drive back, did even better! In the first 100 miles, I averaged 45.7mpg.

But then 163 miles after that (263 miles total since recording), I had climbed up to 46.8mpg.

Keep in mind that this was 263 miles in California from Fresno back to LA, and involved freeway speeds of up 70mph, steep mountain grades, and gusty winds through the passes. It wasn't a smooth, flat road at a constant 50mph. I was very impressed with the Fit for these numbers!

Those are some nice mpg figures, especially at that speed. I'm most envious of the 60 deg readings I see on your dash. I can't wait to see the positive changes in fuel efficiency when we get into some warmer temps here. It was 3 deg on my morning commute today, nothing ever really warms up at those temps. I am really looking forward to some balmy 45-50 degree weather.

I have gone through about 10 fill-ups for far and all have been 40+ ranging from 41-44 mpg! Very happy that I was able to get better mileage in my new Fit over the 97 Civic HX that I traded in (36-39 mpg)

Nice mpg numbers JoeKay. You're next challenge will come this summer when you need a/c on all the time down there. I'm envious of your weather, at least right now.

I was getting average 42 when ever I drove. My wife has a heavy foot. Her average are always in the low 30's. My fit has over 17000 miles on it now. The gauge reads 38.3 MPG. I'm still happy with it.
