How do you think they will stack against the Fit? - 2016 Scion iM and Mazda2
The Mazda rep I talked to at the auto show told me that the 2 was NOT coming to the US market. He said the new one had moved a bit upmarket and there wasn't room for it under the 3 in their marketing scheme. He thought it might come to Canada, however, as they seem to like small cars more than in the US. The Mazda3 is one of the best selling cars in Canada.

2016 Mazda2 Fuel Economy Announced
You can't really go by what a rep said at an auto show. I've gotten answers from dealers ranging from "we're not getting it this year" to "we're definitely expecting it by late 2015". The fact that the EPA has released fuel economy numbers for it is a much better indicator.
A few years ago the EPA released fuel economy numbers for the Suzuki Swift, too.

And I'm sure there are countless examples of reps at auto shows being incorrect about, well, anything and everything. My point is simply that the EPA is a better source. It's possible that we won't get the Mazda 2 in the U.S., but other than delays, we don't have any real reason to think that as of yet.

The Mazda 2 has been discontinued. Would you consider a Mazda 3?

In saying that the Mazda2 was "discontinued," he presumably meant the previous generation. To my knowledge, those haven't been available for months. So essentially there is no Mazda2 until the new one arrives, reportedly later this year.
Mazda cleaned up the front ends a bit on their new models, then toyota went 180 degrees and made the rebadged mazda 2 a frowny catfish monstrosity snout complete with gills.

Another example of "Americans aren't buying the cars we aren't selling in America so we will continue to not sell them" logic.
Every once in a while a manufacturer will sell a basic car not really intended for the US market like Toyota did with the Scion bB/xB. It was wildly successful, so naturally they immediately changed it to a bloated, more expensive and less economical US version. Surprise, sales plummeted!
When will they get it through their tiny brains that not everyone here wants a road barge?
And yes the maws they are slapping on the front of recent models are hideous. Modern, well-engineered cars do not need huge air inlets so all of the grillework is there for show only. They continue to get bigger and flashier with every new model.

Agreed. The dumb, gaping maws on the Fiesta and Yaris helped push me toward the Fit. I liked how the Fiesta drove and the price on it, but I couldn't get past Ford's ugly styling and the truly ridiculous center console with its million buttons. Honda's look is much more refined, inside and out, imo.
Well even though we knew it was coming- this comes from the horses mouth...
