Will a box of 70in by 40in by 15in fit in?

Hi Fitfreaks,

I am planning to buy a furniture piece which will come in a box of dimensions 70 inches x 40 inches x 15 inches. Will this is fit and whats the best way to do it?

If it does not fit normally is there a okay (legal) to just keep= he trunk partially open and get it home (~7 miles) ... what the best way to tie down the partially open trunk?

(I have tried measuring the different possibilities including putting it diagonally from the bottom of the truck to the top of the front seat ... it seems difficult)

Thanks in advance.

I brought home a 60" TV in mine. The box was 65" long and that barely, barely, baaaarely fit. I had to slide the driver's seat almost all the way forward. I'm little so I could still fit, but I was too close to the steering wheel to be considered safe. It was only a mile home so I made it work-- any further and we would have had to figure something else out.

All that was to say, I don't think your box will fit. Maybe someone else can advise you on how to safely tie down the hatch to get it home? Good luck to you!

I can't comment on the size of your box, but if you leave the hatch open, the hatch tied dwon, or rather not completely closed, carbon monoxide will be sucked into your car through a vacuum from an air eddy. You will need to leave your windows open and not drive too long.

Thanks Nicbeau. Did you put the TV box lying flat on the folded seats or have it diagnoally from seats at one end to the roof of the car at the other end ?

We ended up having to lie it flat. We couldn't fit it in diagonally. I still have the box so I measured the height for you. It's only 32" tall. I'm not sure you're going to be able to make it work.

I couldn't fit a Samsung 65" TV in the Fit (box dimensions were approx. 65"x45"x18"). I'm sure you can tie the hatch down with straps/bungee cords but I didn't even try since my wife's SUV swallowed it up.

I have fit a 75 x 20 x 10 inch box diagonally in the back with the seats down and the passenger seat all the way front. Noone could sit there but it fit...but just barely. Thats why I have my trailer for the bigger stuff ha!

Home Depot truck rental is $19 for 75 minutes + $10 for each additional hours (give or take). or U-Haul for similar pricing, but all day. We have used both to get BIG things from Costco or private sales home.

You don't have to buy from Home Depot to use their trucks.

could you have just put the passenger seat all the way down flat in 'lounge' mode after dropping all the rear seats down?

The 40" height of the box would still be a problem, and because of the 15" width, putting it in diagonally doesn't work either.

> furniture piece which will come in a box...

Will it help to remove the item from the box? Then remove anything removable like a leg, etc.

I think this is your best bet. Well that or a friend with a truck.

It is a pity I have not seen any good luggage racks for the 2015. Although I am close to picking up a trailer hitch so as to put on a rear mounted cargo carrier. $120 for the hitch, $90 for the carrier. Would pay for its self in saved gas verse driving my truck on all our camping trips.

I've been looking into a light trailer, like a racknroll, or a Malone Microsport. I like the price point of the carrier better.

After using the latest technology (one of them there tape measures), the answer is NO. Not in any configuration of the Magic Seats that I can find. Tall comes close, but the car is not wide enough between the doors.

Seriously, folks, remember KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid. Find a friend with a pickup or a big enough van or SUV, buy him/her lunch. And remember to measure twice before loading that enormous, expensive TV.
