Hondalink generic cables?

Has anyone found any HDMI to iPhone 5s cables that could replicate what the hondalink cables do?

I was told by a blue-clad Apple employee that the HDMI cable could be bought "anywhere" but the Lightning Digital AV Adapter is proprietary (Apple) and the Lightning to USB cable should be an Apple brand.

I bought the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter, but my USB and HDMI cables came from an online vendor (whose name escapes me at the moment) – I found both in 6" lengths, which eliminates the rats nest of wires when I have my iPhone plugged in (usually only to run the Honda Nav app).

I read in numerous reviews that non-Apple Lightning to USB cables were "cheaper but not performing up to expectations." YMMV.

Mine have worked fine so far (also got one for my iMac).
