Mobile 1 and Gas Mileage

I did my first oil change on my 2015 LX CVT a couple of months ago. I used Mobile 1, 0W-20 for the change. The odometer reading was 5,300 miles and the Maintenance Minder showed 70% oil life remaining.

At the time of the oil change, my average fuel mileage had been 37.8 mpg for the 5,300 miles. Now, here's the kicker. Since the oil change, I have driven another 1,200 miles and am averaging only 35.3 mpg.

I have been using Mobile 1 in my cars since 1979; and always saw an increase in fuel mileage after changing out the factory oil for the first time. Has anyone else noticed a change in mileage after changing from the factory oil?

Note: The mileage numbers I used above are readings from the computer, not actual calculated usage. However, that shouldn't matter since it is comparing apples to apples.

It probably went down because you're supposed to use 0w-20

Good catch; but that doesn't explain it. I used the correct weight. The 0-30W in my OP was a typo. I have corrected it.

I suppose there could be one other explanation. I did the oil change in the early part of June; which is the start of the hottest part of our Georgia summer. In theory, I guess the AC could be putting a heavier load on the engine.

It could be more AC use, a little less highway miles, getting stuck in a traffic jam or two, etc. I wouldn't worry about it!

I'm in NC and my mileage went down about 2 mpg between winter and summer when I started to use the A/C

in my area we use oxygenated gas in the winter time + a/c on with defrost/foot mode.

Because I am an old guy with old habits that are hard to change. When I got my first car, oil changes were required every 1,000 miles. When I started using synthetic oil in 1979, I adopted a 3,000 mile oil change schedule. The Fit is the first car that I have ever allowed to go past 3,000 miles and it was driving me crazy.

just like paul walker said to vin diesel in fast and furious a lot has changed. i also used to change oil every 3k esp with synthetic but with this honda they said to go by the oil life meter because it measures how you drive into how frequent you change the oil. and also the factory oil has chemicals in it to help the engine break in. i followed honda's guide and mileage goes from 35mpg to over 40mpg with using the air conditioner everytime. car likes low speeds and smooth acceleration to keep good mileage I've noticed now with having the 6 speed that mpg varies a lot when driving locally because i like to take off hard all the time. but other wise its great on the highway.

70% after 5300 miles? I'm only at 1300 miles on my month-old Fit LX CVT, and my oil life is already at 80%.

My MPG has been fluctuating wildly... first tank was around 36 mpg, next was 31 mpg, then 37, then 35. My current tank seems like it's coming in around 39-40 so far.

I also thought it strange that my oil life was showing 70% with 5,300 miles. Honestly, that is part of the reason that I decided to change oil when I did. I don't mind telling you, I don't have a lot of faith in the ability of the Maintenance Minder to predict remaining oil life.

Here's something else to ponder. Your oil life is already at 80% with 1300 miles. I reset my MM when I changed oil. It is still showing 100% oil life even though I have driven just over 1400 miles since the oil change.

I will probably continue to change my oil based on mileage regardless of what the MM tries to tell me. I would rather err on the side of changing oil too often as opposed to not changing it often enough.

I think you'll read 100% until it gets down to just under 91% then it will read 90%. When you changed oil it was probably really close to dropping to 60% which seems about right as I get to 15% on my '09 2nd gen FIT between 10,500 and 11,500 miles.

I follow the MM. Why spend the money when Honda deems it unnecessary?

At 8,500 miles when I switched over to Mobil 1 extended performance 0w-20 and using the Mobil 1 filter. Current I am at 17,600 miles or so and at 15% left on the oil life. Seem like it doesn't distinguish between full synthetic and non-full synthetic oil.

Both the initial honda oil and the mobil 1 oil I have put in average around 36 mpg so far. Always AC here for me since I am in SoCal.

My car is a 15' Ex CVT. I have had my car for roughly 10 months now.

Of course not, the mileage minder just looks at how you drive the car.

I switched to full synthetic also. Mileage stayed the same

I had a new 2009 FIT I drove to 70K with only Mobil 1 synthetic oil changes except the original fill. I am used to Synthetics from my many Mercedes days so for a few bucks more I just had the dealer do it. A Honda Synthetic change was 45.00. The Mercedes Synthetic changes were 125.00 to 140.00 so I thought Honda was a bargain.

I was definitely getting better mileage than spec, but I also only used high octane 92 in the tank so I could not tell if it was from the gas or oil. My 2009 had a meter that counted down 10% for each 1000 miles driven no matter how you drove the car--At 10,000 miles your meter was at zero.

I now have a Gen 3, 2015 FIT. The EarthDream engine has it's own computer that measures the type of driving that you are doing--if you use A/C, if you stop a lot, accelerate fast, etc. It takes all those factors into play in counting down. So everyone here is going to be different. I stop and go a lot in Los Angeles. My meter was at 15% when I had 5700 miles on car and if I let it go probably would have been at 0% at 6000+ miles. (On my 2009 FIT--it would have taken to 10,000 miles to get it to 0%. )

On my first oil change on the 2015 I had them again do a Mobil 1 synthetic change. Can't tell if it is making a difference (except it makes me feel good). On my last highway Only trip AVG MPG was 45 MPG on the car meter. That is great! But I also only use 92 octane Chevron fuel. I own this car and plan on keeping it a long time.

After just 500+ miles on the new oil change, my meter was down to 90% with all the A/C and stop and go driving.

this is false. royal purple 0w20 15% was 5493 miles for me.

Ophey, You are Not Getting, "Pretty Good Economy" at 39+ MPG on your Fuelly Meter.

You are getting INCREDIBLE MPG! for a Honda FIT.

I can't seem to break out of the 31-32 avg. range. But on the highway alone for a few hours last month it gave me 45 MPG on that trip only.

BTW: How do you get your Fuelly meter to be at the bottom of your post?

Thanks.
