First Oil Change @ 8,000+ miles? Anyone else?
First Oil Change @ 8,000+ miles? Anyone else?
I don't know how much I trust the Oil Life meter, and I certainly have driven basically only highway miles but @ 5,400 miles the meter just finally rolled back from 60% to 50%.
I bought the car in late July and drove across country/to a few national parks, etc.
I am wondering if anyone else experienced their first oil change timing (Oil Life showing 15%) with pretty high miles.
I'm guessing I'll be at around 8,000 or more when it gets to 15% and I'll likely get it changed before then. Just curious if this is a common happenstance.

See these two threads (there may be others). You can see what mileage others have been getting prior to reaching 15% oil life. And, yes, I think that around 8,000 miles or more is a common happenstance (driving conditions and style will dictate a lot of it).

Thanks. Read the latter but not the former.
I tend to just look at the oil itself and decide ha but it's nice to know this is the norm. Definitely does better than my 1993 Toyota Pickup.

I see the minder system allow anywhere from 4000 to over 12,000 miles on an oil change, it all depends on how the cars are driven and the conditions you drive in.
All you really need to do is check the level once in a while, make sure it isn't empty.
My daily commute is only 5.5 miles each way, if I stick to that my car lets me go about 5k before telling me to change oil.

I did my first oil change in the GK at 8,400 miles with 20% oil life remaining. IIRC, the first oil change on my GE was near 10,000 miles @20% oil life remaining.
The OP's case seems typical. Although Honda won't tell us the parameters it uses to measure oil life, I can guess they use a combination of total engine revolutions, number of cold starts, average ambient temperature, and probably some other factors to calculate oil life.
I don't know how anyone thinks that "looking at the oil" can tell you more. Simply turning dark is meaningless. ALL modern detergent oils will turn dark fairly quickly, as they're designed to hold small particles in suspension. This means the oil is doing its job, carrying off suspended solids instead of leaving them inside the engine as sludge.

Do you suggest changing oil every 5 miles in hard condition?
You seem to be in Mexico, I'm not familiar with vehicle differences in that market. Maybe the recommendations are different from the US?
Is the oil available there identical to the oil available in the US?
Is your car older, before Honda started using the maintenance minder system?
Is your car equipped with a "maint req'd" (or just says "maint") light instead?
If you do short trips less than one mile, you may not reach 3000 miles in one years time and I would hope your manual would say to change oil at 6 months or one year (or similar time based recommendation) even if mileage has not been reached in that time.

I've owned nothing but 4WD pickups my whole life. Drove only short trips and in harsh winters. Barely put on 9,000 miles a year, 10 if I drove a lot. Worked em hard and off roaded a bit.
This is not only my first car ever, but also the first time I've put on nearly 6,000 miles in less than 3 months haha. So it's a big change for me.
The hardest part is not being able to take any beat up road, drive over any obstacle or pull anyone out of wherever they're stuck. Spent a few days in National parks on the way out and about 10 days in Yosemite NP once I got to Cali and I pushed this thing down some roads until I was bottomed out and nicking the clear coat on bristle before backing out haha I really need to learn this whole not having at least a foot of ground clearance and armor thing... As well as less frequent oil changes.

honda recommends to change the oil at least once a year.
