Beefing up 2017 Audio - Which Way To Go?

Just upgraded my 2013 FIT to a 2017 Honda FIT EX (my 4th after my 2007 and 2010.)

In any event...while I mostly enjoy the head unit I think the fullness of the audio is a little lackluster. While I'm not looking for a boom boom car...I would like a little more bottom and mid without feeling like I have to crank the system to the point where I hear distortion. Been doing some research on the site and I've got two questions for the forum.

If you didn't want to spend an arm and leg and wanted to maintain the basic layout and functionality of the FIT would you...

1) Add a Pioneer TS-WH500A under one of the front seats, roll off the bass EQ in the head unit and bring up the bass on the Pioneer to fill in the sound more all the while leaving the stock speakers intact or...
2) Forgo the subwoofer and replace all 4 door speakers with the Polk DB651 and roll the bass EQ back up?

Price is fairly close to being the same for both options...just wondering what the opinions are on what would achieve the more desired result.

Thanks for your help!

Go with the sub. I put an 8" powered sub from Rockville. At first I had it under the passengers seat. Didn't really like it there cause I couldn't reach the controls and the bass was "muffled". It relocated it to the trunk. Couldn't be happier. The stock system isn't that bad...just lacks bass. Go with the sub. Search my posts for pics.

I have a 10" JL currently wired into the factory radio. It gives it enough bump to fill out the sound a little. However the audio quality from the stock head unit is horrendous and nothing you do short of adding an amp for the speakers or replacing the head unit will make it sound good.

The sub is pushed by a little Kenwood Excelon amp.

You can get cheaper gear, I don't think spending money on expensive items without doing a full overhaul would be worth it.

I went with just a sub, and the stock unit couldn't keep up in volume. So I did all the speakers too.

Check out my sig below for my speakers and sub. The sub fits perfectly under the passenger seat.

I say go sub first!! The stock speakers actually aren't THAT bad. I rocked the sub and the stock speakers for a few months before swapping out the speakers. It sounded very decent. Only reason I did the speakers was because I got a great deal on them. Otherwise, I would have been happy to stay stock.

The sub is great since its self-powered and has a remote to adjust the sub volume independent of the stereo.

Dont forget my thread! Lots of discovery, lots of good wiring diagrams to get you started out on ideas, even keeping the OEM HU to make it sound good
