What were your second/other choices, after the Fit?
I absolutely love the looks of the two-door Focus hatchbacks. However, our fleet cars at work are Focuses and they have horrendous transmissions. Cruising at low speed will make you seasick.
I strongly considered a Nissan Versa Note but the one I drove was noticeably louder than the Fit on the highway.

Whoops I was thinking of the previous gen Versa hatch, which was *ugh*. The current Versa Note does look so similar to the GK. I thought that both Versa hbs were still being sold. Anyhow, the Note was not on my list at all.
On the plus side the Versa Note's hatch section can be configured to have a false bottom with a flat hatch floor. Cargo space is only second to the Fit.
Here in Canada we have the Nissan Micra, 5MT for $9,995CAD. It has the same engine and trans as the Versa Note, but much lighter and eschew of amenities: a stripper's stripper car. Still, their 5MT was a blast to drive, and very gocart-ish.

Did the 2 door/3 door ones ever sell in N. America (I thought they didn't)?
I thought the 3d's weren't bad - I love well-rated, well-proportioned 3d hatches, and the US doesn't have enough of them imho (no more new 3d Golfs! Though they seem a bit big to be 3d now).
But wow, the new Fiestas coming up look sweeeet! https://www.netcarshow.com/ford/2017-fiesta/
I kind of ignored Ford until the past several years, with their improved looks. I wish they had their Tourneo/Transit Courier (a Fiesta-based mini minivan sold overseas) here, too.

Both great tips.

...golf was most fun to drive, and i like the interior and exterior styling best...
although i read about some reliability issues with the fit, overall i still felt the fit would have the best reliability and combined with my general bias toward honda, pretty easily pushed me to the fit.

More money: Mazda3 (smaller interior), VW Golf hatchback (much more expensive)
Same money: Nissan Versa Note (not as good handling)
We rented small cars for a year prior to purchase, so went through a lot of different cars. I found the Fit the best value for money for our family, and have not been disappointed. Nothing is perfect

I'm not looking at anything else in the Fit's class as it's clearly the standout in the class. The last Versa I rented was a slow crapcan that truly scared me on the highway with it's lack of acceleration.
Part of me is considering another truck as I used to own a 2013 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road model that I sold for my 2015 Civic Si and really miss having it. However, I just don't think I can justify more than double the purchase price not to mention the increased fuel and maintenance costs.

We had a 2015 Civic and looked for something in the line of a small SUV. We considered the Ford Escape, but I've not been very impressed with the quality of Ford. The Honda HR-V was a strong choice, but Magic Seats and the style of the 2017 Fit LX won out
was the 15 the earlier gen or the current gen civic? i have to say, that one gen prior was one of the worst cars ive driven in a long time. i couldnt even believe it was a honda or a "Civic".
the dealer gave me one as a loaner when i had the GK in the shop for warranty repair for a few days. i hated it so much i felt like walking vs driving it back to the dealer to return it.

Trouble with the HRV is that it has a poor engine only rated at 141 HP vs the Fit's 130 HP. That wouldn't matter if it didn't weigh 500 lb more than the Fit (it's kinda like having to carry around 2 really fat relatives in your vehicle all the time). The HRV though seems to be selling well at the moment but I'm guessing that doing something about that HRV engine is high on Honda's list. The justification for a turbo there is strong.

I know just the 2 you're talking about...
