Is It Okay To Skip Gears In A Manual Transmission?

by watching engineering explained, what do you guys think about skipping gear? It is normal thing to do or it will put stress to the synchros? I generally skip 3rd or 5th when driving in city mostly skip 5th, less time on the clutch is better for your tranny and synchro right?

Truth is, I really know very little about synchromesh transmissions, so I can't say for sure. That said, a lot of people here seem to skip 5th and go directly to 6th.

I dont usually skip gears when upshifting, but frequently skip gears when downshifting in traffic. I don't know if it's harmful, but I've never had a problem.

I do up 1,2,3,5,6, down 6,4,3,2,1. I find no need for all 6 gears. 5th allows me to cruise in green at 50kph/31mph, a common speed limit in the suburbs.

I'm no gearbox expert, but I think the synchro mechanism is just there to help get the layshaft for a particular gear up to a matching speed with the primary drive. The wear would come from friction, and the only thing I can see to change the amount of friction by skipping gears would be if you do a bad job matching revs. If you match revs when you shift, up or down, you can minimize synchro wear.

As far as time on the clutch, I think the problem there is the throwout bearing, they're not designed to have prolonged load from the clutch pedal being pressed. This is more for people who might want to stay in gear at a light, though.

Doesn't matter as long as you're in the correct gear for the speed you are traveling. Rev matching before you select the gear helps.

They took the last 5 gear and made 6 to be the same as 5 and split the difference with 4. Honda. I routinely go 1, 2, 3, 6.

Don't shove and you're fine. Use 2 fingers and light pressure when shifting. She'll go in gear when she's ready and it won't hurt a blinking thing.. If you don't feel a grind, or worse hear one. No problemo.

That's what exactly what I been driving since I got the car 1,2,3,4,6 I don't really see the need of 5th gear if cruising around town at 45-50mph, 5th and 6th gear makes no difference in rpm. Also I skipping gear while down shift as well on 6th going too 4th or 3rd depend on speed, wondering if it will put any stress in the tranny and I do rev match will down shift

Best answer.
OP, you have to consider what the car is doing and what your engine is doing to answer your question.

I see no problem with it, taking into account not going to extremes, like 1st to 6th, or something. If one can properly operate a manual transmission, there's no need to run through every gear. Depends on the situation - traffic pattern, terrain, whatever.
