My Honda Fit Saw the Solar Eclipse
Drove the Fit 820 miles Houston to KY to see the eclipse. I located the perfect shady spot in Kentucky countryside highway 79. It was about 1/2 mile from where I had planned to be, but good enough for the sun moon and earth to be in line. Thanks, NASA for the coordinates, and google for the satellite view. Others started to show up. I told them parking was a $100 for the location. Stunned. But, then I told them today's free. A quick way to make friends from all over the world. One group came from Quebec, some were Russians, college girls from Pittsburgh, a few retired from KY and TN and OH. Some from NJ and NY too. The guy with the Doberman Pinscher works for BMW in Munich, but now relocated to BMW in NJ, working on mobility. The bad traffic reports did not materialize where I was, out in the countryside, maybe in the towns that advertised the event. As it turned out, I got great mileage from the Fit. I was able to get over 531 and 551 miles on a tank by cruising at 62-63 mph, with the AC on. I filled 11.2 and 11.3 gallons of gas at a time. I got over 44-46 calculated mpg, not from the inaccurate Honda gauge reading that shows 2-2.5 mpg generous reading.

I zipped down from Chicago Sunday afternoon and spent the night about 200 yards from the center line in an IL state park. It was hot but the view was great. Mileage calculator showed 47 mpg average on the down leg doing up to 60 mph. I got caught in the mother of all traffic jams on the up leg and eventually took an alt route after spending three-plus hours to get 50 miles. After dark I decided to hell with mpg and joined a left lane convoy doing about 80 mph.

Yup, it was a typical day in upstate NY. Clouds rolled in as the show was getting underway.

Great story and pictures!
We had full eclipse here. Was neat, but not earth shattering. Fit watched from the garage while son and I watched from the back deck.
Wasn't as dark as I thought it would be. That halo around the moon still cast some light.

In any case, that is amazing mpg!

LX CVT. Honda is conservative when it comes to tank volume spec. They don't consider the long neck from under the driver's seat to the filler in the back. Their mpg display is generous by as much as 2.5 mpg. I always fill the tank until I see gas just below the cap. Then, I know the amount of gas I used accurately. At one fill, Honda showed 50.1 mpg, but my calculation showed only 48.05 mpg. How I (alone) achieved great mileage with the AC on mostly with fan in position 2, that's another story. I have to admit, the Honda Fit is an amazing car for gas economy.

Our Fit was in the garage, we watched it from our back deck .....my wife thought it was gonna be dark as night...hah...it was cool, though, birds went silent, cicadas started making noise, and it reversed a short time later. It was cool, but not overwhelmingly so....just a natural phenomenon that was made to be too big of a deal.....but I'm old and jaded, I guess

We're both old, too.
