Radiator Problems

For the last 2 weeks, the heat in my 2015 Fit EX has gradually been getting colder and colder. The last 2 days, I’ve had no heat at all and it’s been below zero here in Minnesota. I have 55k on the car and my radiator needs to be replaced. A fan blade came loose and damaged the radiator. Cost estimate is $750. Honda won’t cover it. I had to get the short block replaced a year ago, although this was under warranty. I’m beginning to wonder about Honda reliability. Anybody else having major issues like this?

no heat in MN this time yr is suicide.. hope you get that fixed soon.

my driver side window glass nearly fell out of the door frame when i got the 16 EX new. dealer fixed it taking nearly a week to get the parts and replace. besides that no major issue.. just minor issues here and there.

honda quality was never been all that great for me unless from japan. all hondas made outside japan has had some kind of problem.. mexico, canada, and the marysville/east liberty plant. so bad i recently i started buying vw's.. and havent looked back.

You ought to go look on Rock auto for a fan and radiator. Fan is $74.00 to $86.00, Radiator is $63.00 to 139.00. That is a long way from $750.

With the labor charge to drain remaining fluid, remove everything and then reinstall the new rad/fan and add the coolant and then test everything I don't think $750 is unreasonable.

The shop said that in order to replace the fan and radiator, the front bumper needs to be removed.

Unless I'm missing something minor radiator damage doesn't stop the heat from working unless you get way too low on coolant. You didn't use stop leak or anything like that to temporarily fix the leak? That stuff can plug the passages of the heater core and create a real mess.

I’m not sure how minor the damage was, but it caused a leak. Also, the fan brackets were broken, so the whole thing really needed to be replaced. Just drove home from the shop- $695 for everything.

Heat is overrated. Real men don't need to drive a car with heat. Wasn't it the cheapest Russian cars back in the Cold War era that didn't have heaters installed?

When I drove into the office today to drop off the car it was -13. That’s when real men start to get cold. When I drove home this afternoon, it was a balmy +6. I guess I didn’t need to get it fixed after all. LOL!

Not just in the Soviet Union. My dad once bought a new 1961 Chevy Biscaine, the most basic model. Engine was a straight 6 and transmission was a "3 on the tree" manual. The only options he ordered on the car were a heater and an AM radio. Basic transportation.

I have had the front bumper off several times. Once to install a protective screen in front of the radiator. It takes about 10 minutes to remove and the same to reinstall. It is a bunch of push clips and a couple of screws. I suggest that you put some masking tape around the edges of the headlights to keep from accidentally scratching them.

I mentioned this thread to an old friend last night and he reminded me that his old VW had a gas heater. Whoa, forgot about that.

Yeah, when I was young I had a '67 Beetle with that auxiliary gas heater. I was always scared that it might blow up or catch fire although it never did. I also installed two scrapyard blowers to try and push more regular heat up front to the drivers area so that my toes wouldn't fall off. Having an engine in the rear is a big disadvantage in the winter when you have to move hot air forward. Windows fogged up a lot because of the lack of vents in those cars. Frost shields helped.
