The rear view camera on my son's 2015 Fit is showing a very cloudy, foggy image. The lens is clear, and the in-car display is working fine. I'll call Bernardi tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions. I bet I could buy a nice DSLR camera for the price of that tiny rear camera.

Actually, I have a camera that mounted to a license plate bracket that I might be able to wire into the system.

I like my rear view camera.

But given the amount of rain where I live, the annoying thing is a good percentage of the time, when it seems I need it the most, it activates to show blurred raindrops. I either, stop, get out, and wipe the lens off, OR simply don't use it.

I suppose it HAS to be installed on the rear end, so I suppose raindrops are inevitable. Not blaming Honda. But it is an annoying reality.

Strange that you say the lens is clear but the image is foggy.

 

It could be that there is moisture inside the camera, but I'm not about to take it apart.

I can't imagine backing up without that camera. It gives such a wide view. It's better than using the rear view mirror or turning around.

 

I love the rear view camera, but all during our six-month long winter here, it's always covered with dirt and slush, just like the entire rear of the car.

GL on the repairs silverEX. it sounds like moisture build up inside the camera unit. you might be able to go aftermarket camera by chance? like splice into the factory wires...?

 

It makes you wonder how effective the sensors are on autonomous vehicles.

 

They are going to have wipers, just like rear windshields ones. Or, jet spray like the european car headlights. Probably more useful than visine eye drops.

 

That was my first guess as well. You might try blowing on it with a hairdryer to heat it up -- so that the moisture inside evaporates and works its way out. Obviously you don't want to overdo things on the heating, but getting it pretty warm and keeping it warm for -- a half hour? -- might help.

 

If the camera were off the car, putting it in a ziploc bag full of rice might work. At least, I've heard of people drying phones out that way, but unless you could figure out where water got into the housing, it wouldn't be a permanent fix.

i like how vw has the camera under the rear emblem. it pops out when in reverse.. always clear. ive not cleaned it once on my dd..and i drive it through snow and salt.

I remember the first time I saw headlight wipers on a Volvo, it was in a parking lot. As luck would have it, the driver was just coming back to the car. I couldn't resist asking her if she thought they helped. She said she didn't even know they were on her car.

 

Exactly. Remember, all the testing so far has been in So. Cal. and Arizona, not exactly areas noted for slush and filth accumulating on cars.

 

No problem! Just don't go out when it's damp or dusty.

 

Our local library gives us at-home access to the Chilton manual, and I found all the details for removing the camera. It's listed under "Chassis Electrical > Audio/Visual and Communication Systems."

 

I brought up thee camera last visit to dealer with my 2016 LX. Weird colors were at the bottom of the screen.

When tech wiped off water, all was fine.

Design problem.

I copied the directions for removal from my library site, and I'll give it a try one of these days.

All these things are great until lenses get foggy, or camera's get stuck and don't pop out.

I enjoy these advances and improvements.
But I also remember that we drove cars bigger, heavier, than these, for decades, with nothing more than mirrors and our own ability to turn our head.
