Front strut "clunk" and play issue
Front strut "clunk" and play issue
My 2016 is getting a lovely "clunk" over bumps on both sides. I am taking it in to the dealer 12/27 AGAIN. I bought it from them on 11/11/19 and for the second time to have them find out why there is so much play in the strut mounts. I took it to their sister dealership, and they said they couldn't hear anything and the service manager basically called the Fit an inferior product, and a cheap car, so I have to deal. So I got pissed and got ahold of the main dealer I bought it from an hour away, and they are taking it in to make sure it gets fixed.
If you lift the front end a few inches off the floor, and pry up and down on the tire, you can hear the obvious clunk, and feel the clunking/movement on the upper strut mount. I think the strut bearings are shot, and or the rubber strut mount. All I know is I didn't pay $14k for a clunky front end. I drive my CRV so I don't get irritated by the noise. I like my Fit, but they need to fix it right.
Anyone else get this with theirs?

my front driver side wheel is making noise when i go over bumps.
its not a grinding noise, nor metallic noise.... kinda like loose plastic noise? not sure how to describe it.
hope you get your fixed =S

Same, no grinding noises, nothing else like that, but when I am between 5mph and about 30, any small bumps, ruts, etc. sound like I am driving over a small curb!! Definitely a clunk from bad strut bearings or a worn strut mount. When I lift the car about 3" off the ground and quickly pry up and down I can hear the clunking, and feel it when my hand is on the strut mount up top, and feel it move up and down 1/8-1/4". NOT normal. Because my CRV has 0 play and it's a 2008 with 150k on all original struts.

Yep, he basically said the Fit is a cheap car, and that's the way they are. ALSO the parent dealership today said basically the same thing. I was told to drive a 2017 and it was basically the same. So in a couple months I am replacing the front struts with KYB, new bearings, and strut mounts. The dealer can kiss my ass. I'll fix it myself....
Welp, I'll just say that is unprofessional and a load of BS from the managers in regards to the build quality.
How many miles are on your 2016?
Did the tech(s) leave a detail story of their diag in regards to trying to source the noise?
Did you and/or the tech check for any abnormal gaps between the upper strut damper and were it contacts the body of the vehicle?
Did you and/or the tech test drive the car with the front anti-roll bar end links disconnected to confirm/deny it as the source of the noise?

They said it's the design of the car itself. It has that small play to allow the tilt when turning the wheel. I said well that sucks, because it's pretty annoying. I told the kid if I put my own parts in, and it stops, I will send them the bill LOL... He just looked at me. I still think it's the lower damper and bearings but whatever.
I will add pics of the upper damper, it looks pretty normal, no crazy gap.
I know, I researched the hell out of this clunky sound. I did find a few complaints on noisy front ends on the 2015-2018. These guys are writing it off, so I am just going to replace what I feel is the issue. And after I do, if it stops the noise I will be damn sure to run the dealer through the mud.
Agreed. I have '17 LX with 50K mostly freeway miles. No issue with front end clunk or steering play.
Well, you never know what the original owner did to the car. OP bought it used I believe. A carfax report may be able to trace the issue. That would not resolve the problem, but at least it would rule out that the Fit, which is a "cheap" car, but not in a functional way.

So this morning I ordered a set of new KYB struts for the front, OEM Honda front strut mount, new strut bearings(and nut), plus 2 new upper strut dampers. So in the next couple weekends I will be replacing ALL of the above. THEN..... If this car is more quiet, and the knocking goes away I will be letting Lundgren Honda of Auburn how much they SUCK, or don't. Will keep you posted.
Stealers....can't live with them - can't ______ them. I paid for a tire rotation that didn't occur just recentl. I marked the tires with a red clay pen ahead of time and had the show the Manager in front of all her service techs at Prime Honda (Boston). Now tire rotation is done at home.

I've found my state's Consumer Protection dept. a valuable resource as far as dealer rip-offs. Registering a complaint - something most people won't go through the trouble of doing - is how I get started.
In my state, once you initiate a complaint against a business, that business is mandated by the state to respond. If it's a national company, the complaint will find its way to the corporate office, not the local one, for the official answers.
That gets the attention of the manufacturer in a hurry. They know they can't bamboozle state officials the same way as they could one person.
