Question Can I use 195 tire instead of the 185 stock tire on stock 16" wheel?

Hey guys!

So, winter is here. Aaaaand I've waited as long as I can to buy winter tires. I know exactly what I want - the General AltiMAX RT43. However tirerack.com does not offer them in the Fit EX OEM size (185/55R16). Can I use the stock wheel and run a 195/55R16 on it? I dunno if it would be perfectly fine..lead to issues eventually..not be okay at all.....

Thanks, fellow Fit Freaks!

you could, use calculator here: http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-...5R16/195-55R16
Another tires are 1.8% wider, which is acceptable (should be within 3%)

You could get Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70s or 80s in the stock size. Nevermind, I didn't realize the General tires were all season. If going all season, then maybe look at 205/50R16 sizing, they are more close in diameter than 195/55R16.

i would not run a 16" snow tire. i went with general altimax as well, sized 185/65-15's, for the taller sidewall and traction in inclement weather. you could always run 14's as well, sized 185/65-14 or 185/70-14. the whole package with steel wheels ($400 for 14", $492 for 15") will be cheaper and a will be a much better bargain then swapping to snows on your current wheels then swapping back in the spring.

For me, no choice but to run 16" snow tires on my Fit. And I'm not doing all-season any more when it does come to snow and ice, did that last year and when just about home, the Odyssey decided to play watch my ass jump in front of you. It was on KuhmoEcsta4X. This year it and the Fit received BlizzakWS80s.

I do agree about getting a second set of cheap wheels or steelies if budget only allows versus swapping tires each season. I went with TireRack's wheel to use as my winter beater.

To begin with, the RT43 is not a true winter tire, but rather an all-season tire. As you know, in the 195/55-16 size, they will run you $368 from Tire Rack and are 1.7% greater in diameter than the stock tires. You will then need to have them mounted and balanced on your wheels.

For a true winter setup, and one that you can bolt on in your driveway, I'd suggest a set of 14" steel wheels and Altimax Arctics (185/70-14) for $400 including mounting and balancing from Tire Rack. You could also save a bit of money by substituting the Firestone Winterforces, for a total of only $388. While the Winterforces won't provide the level of winter traction that the Altimax Artics will, they will still be far superior to the all-season RT43s.

Thank you Padawan, rodney, and 555sexydrive!

We were getting hammered with snow and my wife was getting nervous so I had to order tires asap. I went with the 195/55-16 because I hadn't gotten to your messages and that is what Junior from tirerack.com recommended. I think I'm gonna just get these mounted and balanced on my OEM wheel and then order legit 14" or 15" wheels and snow tires for next winter season.

What changes when you go plus or minus on the wheel size? Brakes, handling, etc

How does changing wheels affect the tire inflation sensors?

I agree with the dedicated winter setup. However, the Winterforces have very good reviews and we have them on our Subaru Outback and drove them to KS on I70 at 75-80mph without any trouble and no excessive road noise. Seemed the same noise as the Conti's that the Subaru initially came with. I value the Winterforces highly and would put them on my Fit in a heartbeat. Just to put another viewpoint in there. I had a look at the Altimax and that thread looks good too. They are probably both very good.

For the 2015 Fits, there are no TPMS sensors as such, so changing the wheels is not a problem at all in that way. You do of course have to go through the reset procedure (as you do whenever the tires are changed or air pressure is adjusted).

For the older Fits, there are pressure sensors in the valve stems, and the car is paired to a specific set of sensors. You can either get a couple of sets of sensors and set the car's computer accordingly when swapping wheels, or (if you like to live dangerously) not have them on one set and put up with the light and not being able to disable the traction control system.
