Remove Spark Plugs Before Adjusting Valves?

I must be getting old. I cannot remember. But it seems to me that I used to remove the spark plugs before adjusting the valves in order to release the compression in the cylinders (so that the crank would turn by hand).

What do you guys do?

Thanks.

I also removed plugs before valve clearance adjustment way back when. Made it easy to press on the fan belt w/ one hand while the other hand was on a fan blade to rotate the crankshaft. Since you needed to check the plug gaps or replace them anyway ..... it just made sense.
