DIY valve adjustment but still ticks
DIY valve adjustment but still ticks
The Fit runs much better now and seems to sound better with the hood down. However, with the hood up there is still quite a bit of clicking. I used a feeler gauge to set the clearances to .006 on the intake and 0.01 for the exhaust when the engine was cold.
Did I do something wrong or is this normal? Honestly I don't recall what it sounded like when new. It has 65K miles on it.
I also cleaned out the throttle body and the EGR valve. Seems more responsive.

Actually, mine started making ticking sounds at various times and temperatures from the time it was new. I also adjust my valves meticulously and it makes no difference. Some say it's piston slap, some say it's injectors, I have no idea, but you can drive yourself crazy over it to no avail. My motor, which is still at times silent and sometimes noisy like a sewing machine, still runs perfectly and gets excellent gas mileage at 207K miles. What matters is how it sounds out the tailpipe, how it feels by the seat of your pants and gas mileage. When my Fit was new the first time I adjusted the valves and put in a set of Denso TT iridium plugs it picked up 2 mpg and has been better than new ever since. Sleep easily.
The injectors on the fit are relatively LOUD, Piston slap is almost always accompanied by Knock sensor errors and check engine lights in my experience.
Its also much louder noise that continues to get worse,, it often shows up cold at first and goes away when the engine heats up.
REGULAR oil changes with any good brand of oil are important..
There is no hydraulic adjustment to speak of in the GD engine,, so its always got a little bit of that swing machine rattle ,,
just like all there other old school Honda single cam engines..
