The infamous rattle! (but with a twist?...theres always a twist!

Aight ya'll,

Ive got a 2009 Honda Fit 144000miles. It has a ticking noise when in idle (P and D but none in R). As soon as I start moving forward it stops. Even if I let the car roll forward without putting my food on the accelerator, if I move above like 2-5mph it will stop. Same with general acceleration.

The noise only started when the temperature dropped below 65F and I didn't have it last winter, or the winter prior. In the cabin its quite loud. I can hear it when I look underneath the steering wheel. but honestly its louder in the cabin than it sounds coming from the engine. I've read in the Honda Fit line, some vibration is normal, some clicking problems can be solved with valve adjustments. However a lot of what I've read seemed to be persistent clicking while driving and accelerating.

What I cant figure out is that The engine only rattle/clicks in idle. imagine youre listening to music on medium volume, and you put it on pause in the middle of a song. Thats how fast the rattling noise stops when I give it some gas. The engine feels perfect again and im chill. But then as im braking too a stop, the sounds returns and irritates the hell out of me until I start driving again. It cruises without the clicking/rattle, and other then the cabin noise the engine seems to be working just fine.

Its got new control arms, new belt, 1 month old oil, motor mounts are good, new plugs.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had something similar in one of my cars, ended up being the torque converter Some of the blades on the impeller or turbine were broke, and when it was in lockup, the sound would go away.

Tricky one! You say it isn't present when stopped in reverse. You know, I'm battling an idle vibration issue still on my toyota, and I've got no solid idea what it could be. It shakes exclusively when stopped in gear (automatic trans,) goes away in park & neutral, but the kicker is it's got hydraulic lifters, there's no vacuum or exhaust leaks (just replaced the cats and muffler myself,) and I cleaned the injectors by hand, replaced spark plugs, all engine and transmission mounts and exhaust hanger/insulators.

Anyways, since your car is making its noises in all but reverse I wonder if it's vibration of a loose component or the torque converter as mentioned above (not that I'm well-versed in those.) Many have logged issues with heat shield rattle. I'd like to suggest getting under it and feeling around for something loose. The heat shield is quite close to the cabin, so it may be more noticable while inside.

Oh and not to threadjack, but if anyone has ideas for my toyota problem, I couldn't get any help on its forum. 😂 When it comes to vibration they're all lift kits and driveline issues.
