fill up keeps shutting off

I can't fill my gas tank.. the pump repeatedly shuts off after a few seconds even when the tank is empty. At first I thought it was just some gas station pumps that fill too fast, but it happens at most all the gas stations now. Fill up takes ten minutes as I have to stand there and trickle the gas in..
No codes, no unusual smells of gas, gas mileage is normal (average 36mpg). I've never topped off, always just fill to first click off of the pump.
2009 Fit, base model.
I wandered through the search of threads here but haven't found anything yet.

my best guess is something related to the evaporative canister/system. Without any code and no obvious leaks it looks like a gradual replacement of all parts and hoses which doesn't thrill me..
any/all ideas welcomed..

At the next fill-up...twist the hose and nozzle 90-180 degrees and try again.

Subscribed for a solution! I've heard this complaint before, and yeah the most likely causes are impeded venting of the fuel tank or obstruction of the filler neck. I haven't taken the gas tank out of the fit yet so I don't know if there's a filler screen down where the neck enters the tank.

This might be a good opportunity to justify purchase and use of an otoscope!
