08 AT now thumps bad shifting

Hi,

2008 honda fit AT 165k came to a stop and thumped as it came to rest.
Drove away normally until it shifted, 1st to 2nd was a significant thump. From park or neutral to drive it thumps into gear. I was on back roads and kept it slow to be safe so I don't know about any other gears.

Park or drive into Reverse, no thump, normal operation.
Only drove a mile or so with it shifting hard, seemed to function normally other than that.

About 300 miles ago I had all motor and trans mounts replaced with OEM. It's been driving great, no more rattle at a stop lights.

Every time I read about messing with tyranny fluid I've heard horror stories so NOT knowing previous owner ever changed it I didn't either. It started this at the end of my commute to work. I'll check fluid level when after my shift.

Please don't tell me I now need a transmission....

Too many miles without changing fluid. That is your next step. No other problem can be diagnosed until fluid is known good anyway. Unless you still want to follow the plan "drive it into the ground".

The fluid must be drained and filled 3x to replace about 95% of it. Many threads describing it on here.

Isnt replacing the fluid also likely to cause problems?

I'm driving it but prefer to not have it be actively getting damaged (aside from normal wear).

Looking for a new car but wasn't planning on selling a potential timebomb to any other poor sap

Fluid looks exactly like needs replacing but no worse.

I should be more clear... I'm not sure if previous owner changed it or not. ASSumed

Which solenoid is B?
Brown connector?

Edit: Nope aftermarket B solenoids are the black one

NHa, you're in luck to get a dtc. Now you have a good pointer from the car itself. I looked at this a few weeks ago, knowing nothing about their locations, and some googling, reading, yourtube and parts diagrams showed me where the solenoid is and the replacement part number. It is not related to my problem so I didn't move forward. But you can get the part and put it in yourself, not too expensive either. The solenoids redirect fluid to move gears around. Each one controls two of four gears (not sure where the 5th gear comes into play). The error code is probably the computer noticing either incorrect voltage from the solenoid, or trying to move the solenoid and not seeing a change in pressure elsewhere. You could also try to test and clean it if you like getting in depth, but personally I think I'd just swap it out.

Do at least 1x fluid change, whether you want to do a full flush is up to you.

I am not familiar with the theory that replacing the fluid causes problems. I have heard one other person say that but IDK.

You're right! Not hard to get to.
took it out, put a 9v across both contacts, they both worked OK. Followed this guy on youtube suggestion to leave it open and then shoot brake clean in there.

Would've checked the tubes too but I couldn't find anybody who would sell me just the gasket and I knew if I messed with that gasket it wasn't going to stay in one piece.

So far so good. It's been 3 issue free days.
I do think I'll do at least 1 fluid dump

The "leave old fluid alone" thesis goes something like: new fluid has new detergents which cause all the built up crud to break loose and then clog valves and solenoids and such.
you did the right thing for your transmission which was operating just fine and now as a result it doesn't operate just fine anymore. If you been changing it, keep changing it, if you haven't, don't start. So the idea goes.

That's cool to hear. I wonder if I should clean mine. Hadn't considered they could be dirty but still work okayish. For me it would be the lockup solenoid, if anything, but it's the same location on the trans. No parts needed to remove and replace?
