replacing canadian honda fit DX auto door cylinders, and recoding ...

y'all;
for canadian owners of 2013 honda fit DX automatic transmission, who are experiencing problems with keys not working in lock, or the
lock cylinder completely not working anymore, you can swap out either the driver or passenger side door cylinder, and before installing,
you can recode the door cylinder. alternatively, you can remove the door cylinder assembly, replace old pins with new ones, and reinstall.

i recently swapped out both driver and passenger side door cylinder assemblies on my 2013 honda fit DX, automatic, canadian model.
basically, the driver and passenger door cylinder assemblies are the following part numbers:

driver side: 72185-TF0-G01
passenger side: 72145-TF0-003

once i purchased the above, the door cylinders were recoded using a pin kit i purchased from an american locksmith and hardware store.
apparently, canadian locksmith suppliers only sell this pin kit to registered locksmiths. just purchase this kit from an american supplier if you
intend to recode your cylinders.

after recoding the new door cylinders to my honda fits key, i then installed them into their respective driver and passenger doors.
i used videos to find out information as to get access to the car doors interior and how to repace the door cylinder. the videos i used show
how to remove the complete assembly which contains the door cylinder, door actuator, and door handle assembly. what i found out after
getting access to the door interior, is that you are able to simply remove the bolt that holds the door cylinder to the handle, and disconnect
its lower end from the door actuator. once both these tasks are done, the door cylinder and short cable assembly can be carefully removed
thru the top of the door side. there is no need to remove the door actuator, and to remove the bolt holding the window rail guide. after the
remove of the old non functioning door cylinder assembly, it was a simple task to replace it with the new door cylinder assembly that was
recoded to my honda fits key.

alternatively, i could have removed the old door cylinder assembly, and clean and perhaps replace the old pins with new pins and reinstall
the renewed old door cylinder. i didnt have that much time and i found it was easier for me to do a swap instead.here are some pics of the parts used, and some ref videos that i used for my R&D before doing the repair. i saved myself a few hundred dollars, and could have saved more by repairing and reinstalling the original door cylinder assemblies.

the mounting plate is flipped between driver and passenger.

videos i used for reference before removing door side panel:

i did this for my 2013 honda fit and it worked out perfectly. before undergoing any such repair, i strongly suggest
you do your R&D on your particular model, and confirm that the parts are the ones meant for your year of your vehicle,
before purchasing. as well, please ensure you use the correct videos that match your year of vehicle too.

i was quite happy to be able to recode my new parts to match my ignition key. and as a bonus, i know know how to
get access to the inside of each front door.

cheers,
billpong
