what's the best way to put in a new 5th gear mt

I was wondering how the best way would be to put in a new 5th and maybe 4th grear on mt. I want my rpm's where the automatic are on the highway. Are the ratio's somewhere to be found. where can you order new gears?
I really like the car, but hate the high rpm on the highway. I think I am willing to for go the warranty, for the cruising comfort on the highway. I do a lot of out of state driving. my fit is 5 days old and I already have 500 miles on it.

I think the gear ratios are posted in this forum under the mpg section...or you can get them from any car mag review.

I recommend that you slow down...I know that is tough..."I cant drive 75!"

Your other action is to wait for 2nd gen and/or trade for the auto. Sometimes you got to give up something.

I will keep my head-gear alert for any swaps that I may run upon.

Try slowing down...leave earlier.
Good Luck.

I think 5th gear should be taller. The jump from 4th to 5th should be as big as 1-->2 (2:1 ratio)

I don't like the idea of driving slower. A yaris, which is only a few hundred less than a fit, gets like 37 mpg w/ the automatic. I don't think yaris drivers drive slower hwy speed. The canadian fit got better mileage from changing the gear ratios. 5th gear revs too high regardless of what speed you are. A lot of times when I first got my car, i accidentally wen tto 90mph b/c it's too strong. The car is also too buzzy. I can't have a conversation in the highway.

::EDITED POST::

Getting TALLER gears are going to cost you an arm and a leg, then having it installed is going to cost you your other arm and leg.... then you won't be able to drive anyway so I just don't see the point

Here is a link to A&J's thread regarding gears. The thread is promoting a shorter final gear, however they make reference to a JDM gear that is taller. (See Post #18 in thread below)

im not nuts

i was just wondering about changing 5th gear. I have built a few racing porsches, and have a 87crx si, autocrosser. I could pull the tranny myself, and find someone more qualified to change the gearing. I was just thinking this car is so close to a perfect little car, it just lacks that low rpm cruising speed. I don't mean to sound like I drive 80 all the time I should have said I hate how high it revs at 60, it is still way to high. again I compare it to my 89 crx hf which was a great highway car, but not a four door.
i do appreciate the responses

Per Honda 2007 catalog:

MT: 3.462, 1.870, 1.321, .970, .757, final 4.290
AT: 2.996, 1.679, 1.067, .756, .550, final 4.560

You're going to need to change a lot more than just 4th and 5th; the ratios aren't even close though overall they're probably evened out somewhat by the much shorter final on the AT. You could drop in a JDM final which is 4.111 like suggested earlier, and that would help somewhat, but it'll affect the whole powerband and not just cruising speed. Not worth it in my opinion.

It would be insane to purchase a brand new '07 car and then go messing with the gears. Not only would it void your warranty but it would also cost a lot of money, give a lot of headaches, and generally be a bad idea when you could just buy another car that already has the specific things you wanted..

Yea of course it's not worth it. Canada is lucky because it comes stock with better gear ratios (we assume...the gas mileage improved).

I wonder why it revs so high. Maybe in Japan, people don't drive 80mph? Thank goodness for the sport stereo with speed sensitive volume. My mp3s are the only thing that cover up the loud buzzing.

It revs so high because it's a 1.5 liter gasser hauling around 2700lbs or so.
Also, people in most of the world don't drive 80MPH and they don't expect their $15k car to ride/sound/feel or perform like a $40k Lexus.
It's suprisingly quiet IMO.

R18 Mt

From talking with the transmission guy at my work, the civic R18 MT is really really close to the Fit L15 MT. I don't know about swapability between gears, but if anyone has easy access to an R18 MT and a L15 MT it could provide some useful info. I will try and do some comparing of internals when/if I can get a chance, but I don't have any access to parts hands on, just parts catalogs and ISIS. I'll see if I can find anything.

Canadian ratios are no different AFAIK, but I can't find the ratio's for CA listed anywhere to compare to be certain.

Japan's average highway speed limit is 80 kph (50 mph), though I believe some roads have 100 kph (62 mph) limits (not where I lived though). Like here of course, people don't always obey the speed limits (Smokey Nagata ). It's a moot point anyway though since the JDM MT ratios are different than ours -- 1-3 are longer, 4 & 5 are practically identical, and the final is a bit longer as well. JDM Fit is lighter though; the USDM Fit gets shorter gears to make up for the ~ 200lbs gained due to the stricter crash standards here.

As for noise, the Fit is surprising quiet for what it is. Personally, I don't understand why people expect or want cars to be so quiet -- it's a car, not the sofa in the living room -- it makes noise and should make noise, and the noise is more fun/useful than most music or a chatty g/f usually. (I LOVE music btw, just not when I'm driving in most cases)

Canadian Fit Gear ratios on the MT's is good for fun driving.. not for low revving. at 124kpH I'm engaging vtec. so 3800RPM at 140(roughly 80MPH) where I normally drive I'm well up there in revs. The fit is amazingly quiet for such a light car. MUCH quieter than the Yaris or Versa and even quieter than the civics.

Yeah, that's pretty much the same here for that speed, so again, I'm almost positive the MT ratios are the same for both countries.

I thought the Fit was too quiet when I bought it, you could hardly hear the engine in most cases and I didn't like it -- almost no feedback for driving. I was so happy when I got my intake put on b/c I could finally hear it, and once the exhaust was in, it's been heaven.

I'm referring to next year's model, which isnt out yet. Future MT fits qualify for green tax because they did something to boost the mileage, which is assumed is the transmission/gearing since AT will get the same mileage.

The fit is more quiet than average at idling and when you start the engine. BUT it gets loud when you drive 80mph or even 65mph on highway. The sound deadening stuff can only do so much

Well, there you go then. Like I said, couldn't find anything listing the ratios to verify. Would be curious to see what they are, though. Interesting that the US specs list them in plain view, but the Canadian site/catalog doesn't tell you jack.

I'm pretty sure the difference is low throttle vtec engagement points. I saw the DIY VTEC light at the results were 3400RPM VTEC engagement. My canadian model's engine note changes quite clearly at 3800Rpm at low throttle. Lower if I go past 25% throttle. I don't have a VTEC light but I was thinking of doing that mod this long weekend (canadian Thanksgiving) so I'll verify then. I'm 99.9% sure that vtec engages at 3800RPM not 3400 on canadian models.
