Tip for restoring faded plastic trim!

I found this today online, and had to try it out on my truck. I know there isn't a lot of plastic trim on the Fit, but maybe someone could use it on a faded cowl or something. Plus it is a good tip to know in general.

All you do it hold a heat gun (on high) about 1.5-2" from the plastic, it will restore the original color like magic.

I made a little video of me restoring the faded grey trim on my truck (if it were black trim the results would be even more dramatic).
BTW- I finished up the spots I missed after filming the video.

WOW. Where did you learn that?

I'll keep an eye out for a vehicle to try that on.
Of course if the Fit plastic is like the paint, it may melt.

honestly i don't know if this is bad for the plastic or not, but i just took a tire dressing applicator and rubbed it across my plastic...it's been a week and it still looks gorgeous

I just did it this week, but from what I read online, is that it basically restores it to new. So if it took 4yrs to fade, once you restore it with the heat gun, it should last about that long before it fades again.

But with that you have to worry about masking off the parts, surface prep, etc. and you still might have chipping/peeling.
This is faster/easier and more permanent.

long time ago while i was trying to bend back a bumper trim i used heat gun and i noticed that the area i heated turned to a nice black...at the time i thought i kinda melted it (ruined) the look but perhaps maybe by accident i unfaded that area. hahahaha.

The "melting" part is what I'm scared of...I might want to have my GD's dash retain its discolored spots than risk melting.

Chris...I'd recommend using a trim dressing like Meguiar's Gold Class or Mother's Back to Black before trying this method.

I wish I'd known about heat guns when I was a Jar Head..... Apply KIWI shoe polish to boots or shoes apply heat until polish melts, let cool and polish with wet cotton ball.... Looks better than the best spit shine on inspection day and last for a lot longer.... Might be someone out there that likes shiny shoes but probably not here on fitfreak.
