Are there benefits to Honda's nonplanetary automatics?

I was reading Car and Driver the other day and in a review of an Accord, the author mentions the Accord's peculiar nonplanetary automatic transmission. This is definitely not my field of expertise so if there are any transmissonphiles that can shed some light on the subject, I thank you.

Could this also be the reason Honda automatics are so "delicate" and does the Fit have this transmisson as well?

I've been trying to find information about this as well, but I gave up several months ago. I can only find old info on Honda's site about their AT design, which doesn't use planetary gears. I haven't found a single thing about the design of their current ATs but I would assume they still do not use planetary gears. Don't know if there is a benefit but I know they initially didn't because they didn't want to license the patents.
