I've never attempt to remove the antennae before and can't advise from experience. However, you may like to check out another thread of this forum discussing the upgrade to shark fin antennae.

In the event my pinocchio's antennae is stolen (knock wood), I will change to the shark fin type

It can be removed, however, you'll be left with a hole in the roof. You need to remove the plastic roof latch cover in the headliner inside the rear hatch and then pull the headliner down to get a hand in there and unbolt the antenna mount. 15mm bolt holds it on, but then you'll have the hole to deal with.

Go w/ the VG Shark Fin - it's first class.
