Foam blocks or Roof rack for canoe?

Would you trust foam blocks to carry a 16' aluminum canoe on a '17 SE?

When I was a kid my dad always lugged the canoe on his late 80's four door civic by only using foam blocks. Always made the 5 hour trek to Algonquin every year with no problem

The option for a roof rack is a $600 Yakima system from Rack Attack. Talking to the guys at the store Yakima is not necessarily better than Thule. Only thing is Thule does not cover canoes being carried on a Honda Fit as it did not pass Thule city safety test.

I will be making the same trek to Algonquin in a few weeks with the new fit, always used a caravan up to this year.

I wouldn't as lots of reports of the Fit's thin roof panel. People have dented it pretty easily. What's a 16' aluminum canoe weigh?

I'd invest in rails if I really wanted to haul my kayaks w/ the Fit.

I come across this picture of the fit carrying s canoe and a kayak using the gunnel foam pads.

But yes denting the roof is a concern, reading posts from the roof denting from a plastic bin and others cleaning.

I absolutely wouldn't use the foam block method. The roof sheet metal is too thin.

Faced with a similar choice, I chose not to go with a roof rack either. I don't trust the rack not to dent the metal, or more likely, damage the paint. I got a trailer instead. More money, but more versatile in the long run.

I went with the Yakima 48" round bar system. Put the canoe on yesterday and took it for a spin city and highway driving. Car was a bit more sluggish on the start and felt like I had a sail on the roof when merging on the highway. Other than that it ran great. I will be loading the Fit up tomorrow morning for a weeks worth of camping and update with pictures.
