mpg in socal
Alright, so the past couple times I've filled up and calculated my mpg and I've been averaging about 30 mpg..and that's with mostly city driving and doing 65ish on the freeways. I want to average more but I can't figure out how so i wanna know what you guys are averaging in socal and how u'r doing it? Time to brag everyone. Thanks.
My worst has been 28 (all city, no hwy) and my best has been 39.4 driving down Hwy 1 below San Fran. I average 30.5-32 with about 40 miles daily round trip fwy pushing 75-80 mph.
I just tried to drive a full tank keeping it under 3500 (boy was that hard) and it didn't seem to make much of a difference. Still it all beats my 10 mpg F150 that I couldn't even fill up full at costco-pumps stop at $99 and the second tank was only half full! Ouch!

i've been averaged around 40 in my AT FIT!!! i cruise at 60 on the freeway, and i accelerate really REALLY slowly. like, use the "raw egg between your foot and the accelerator" mentality. screw people behind me, they'll get where they're going soon enough. i also take my foot off the accelerator whenever possible and coast. a tip: according to Top Gear, coasting while keeping your car in-gear uses no gas, but if you shift into neutral the car has to send gas into the engine to keep it from stalling. so coast in gear whenever possible.
the biggest tip i can give you, tho, is no jackrabbit starts. take it easy and it'll pay off.

i think that i have an pretty easy time getting 35+mpg because i'll feel like i'm haulin' some major ass, but i'll look at the speedo.....60mph?!?!?!?!?! so i stay at about 65-70mph. did 36mpg today, and i expect my next tank to be around there as well. i have yet to fall below 30....i bet i will when take a vacation from work..

I've been getting 23-27 mpg on all city driving. Mostly short 3 mile trips. Most I've ever got was 36 mpg from popping up to 80 mph, then coasting down to 55, then cruising at 60 in freeway. Then I drafted a big rig at 40 mph during a light traffic jam. Otherwise, I would get about 30ish on freeway. Engine is still being broken in to though, less than 2K miles on the car right now.

i just calculated 34mpg, worst tank out of 6 since my odo clicked past 10k miles. i've seen an average of 36mpg since that magic number - 10,000.
about 40/60 [city/highway] driving. i'm in traffic about 90% of the time i'm on the freeway so i'm usually only going 15-20mph in 2nd gear and keep good distance with the car ahead of me to minimize my braking. AC is on the whole time i'm on the freeway, AC off and windows down when i'm on the streets - otherwise accelerating becomes a muffler scream-fest

Best I've gotten on my AT Fit was 32.5 mpg. Second best was 32.0 mpg, and that was using the A/C the whole time, driving around the city/freeway with 5 people in my car. Weird huh?
It also seems that whenever I fill Shell gas my mpg suffers. I have no idea why. I filled Shell the other day and I've been driving slow, yet my tank seems to be going faster than when I had 5 people in the car + A/C.
BTW: What part of SD are you from mzamike? I see like 3-4 Fits at Mesa College everyday and I wonder who they are.

Have you tried timing the red lights? When you see a red light up ahead, coast down 5 mph below speed limit. And when you get even closer, say 400 to 800 yards, coast & speed down a little more. If you're lucky, the light might turn green and you might not need to stop. Also, note that there's an interesting characteristics about most traffic lights in orange county. Every time you see the left green arrow, you'll probably take about 15 to 30 seconds for the red light to turn green. So you can take your sweet time to get to the light until it turns green. Once, I had a lucky week, and got most of the green lights resulting 28 mpg all city with sport auto. I tried to do it again, but I get 25-27 (epa estimations).
Also, here's another interesting fact. When I see a green light about half a mile ahead of me, I already know it'll turn red by the time I get there. So I drive under speed limit just to see if the light will turn green. This helps a little, but not much.
If you drive on the same streets routinely, try to figure out if the traffic lights run on timer or sensors. Once you figure that out, you can adjust your speed so you don't have to stop/idle as much.
I tried the overinflated tire pressure trick...not much difference with all city driving where most of the MPG gets eaten up. Good luck, if you take this advice, I hope it increases your average MPG by 1 at least.
