Black Star Canyon's mysterious nature and its colorful, often dark history has given rise to a whole host of urban legends and ghost stories throughout the Orange County area. The air of mystery surrounding the canyon is further enhanced by its eerie silence and being prone to sudden gusts of wind (both due to its unique geography). Though historically innacurate, one of the most popular ghost tales, which originally appeared on the Internet in 1995 and later published in the book Weird California, tells of a group of friends who witnessed the ghosts of the Spanish conquistadors marching down the hill in the form of small, black shadowy figures (Read here). Many of the more popular legends have sprung from the fact that Black Star Canyon was, allegedly, the meeting place of a Satanic cult in the 1980s, which is often misstated as having been the Ku Klux Klan due to the numerous hikers' reports of seeing distant bonfires in the canyon. Other stories include the canyon being haunted by a demon called "Black Star", being home to extraterrestrials and/or a secret military installation, and being guarded by Indian spirits. The oldest ghost story involving the canyon came from the Spanish, and involved the canyon being haunted by a banshee called "La Llorona" (The Wailer), who was said to live in a well and have the head of a horse. The following excepts, illustrating the rich urban legends and stories surrounding the canyon's history, is from the paranormal website, The Shadowlands:
Black Star Canyon

Sounds interesting, unfortunately it doesn't sound like a driving canyon

its not a driving canyon.. its a 26 mile loop tho for bike riders. Black star canyon road to silverado canyon road.

I used to take my van, load it up with homeboys and we used to F***k around up there alot.. its definitely a scary place, because we always went at night. I heard most of the stories are true, and there IS a private community back there that is heard to house lots of KKK members. ie... Blackstar Bill.

Although actual black star canyon road IS NOT a driving road, the highway that it is off, Santiago Canyon Road.. is REALLY fun driving road... i recommend it for a nice drive, or meet/caravan. Hit me up if anybodys down... ill meet anybody out there day or night.

here's a link.

Google Maps

from the 5, 57 or 55 fwy, exit Chapman go east till it turns into Santiago Canyon Rd, past Irvine lake for about 3 to 4 miles, then its an out of nowhere left turn, so try not to miss it.

This blackstar stuff is all bs. I actually mountain bike there and 2 times at night around 8-9pm. With the appropriate amount of lighting its not that dark. There is a guy there though that harasses mountain bikers named Art Tuttle.

We need to have a Live Oak meetup at Cook's Corner to eat, get assraped by bikers, and then hit it up. My friends and I hit up Live Oak all the time, always makes me glad that I got paddle shifters.
