Goto La Cienega's Restaurant Row in LA. Lawry's is good. So is Fogo de Chao.
Or Olympic and Western Cho Sun Gahlbi. Nice glitzy KBBQ.
Of course the best place my wife and I ate at was Mama's Fish House in Paia, Maui.

depending on the budget...I could recommend a lot place...if you want sushi /japanese....there place in Santa Ana call Murasaki on Fairview and MacArthur recommend to eat at bar and Tom and Dan will treat you two well...Thai palce I recommend Siam Taste of Asia in Santa Ana, the fried tofu is to die for...(only accept cash)...for Cuban I recommend Felix Continental Cafe in Old Town Orange...great place to go after dinner too....for Italian I would recommend Mangia-Mangia in Huntington Beach everything on the good....if you want any more placea to eat just ask man....
if you ever make it out to malibu there's a really good seafood place with decent prices and a beautiful view in the evening. it's called The Chart House Chart House Restaurant. there's also a location in Redondo Beach but they're not as good, the Malibu location was the first on the West Coast and it's really hard to top their food quality and service.
Mike suggested Fogo De Chao Welcome to Fogo de Chão- i've been there a couple times and it's a little pricey for dinner, IIRC it's $65.00 per person but it's really worth every penny! i found a place in Encino that's comparable and a lot more affordable - they're called Sampa Grill SAMPA GRILL: FRESH SALADS - BRAZILIAN CHURRASCO - FINE WINES - Home and it's $30.00 per person. i took my wifey there the other week, we also had a bottle of pino and only spent $110 tax and tip included.
damn... now i'm hungry

I like the finer things, what can I say?
Dinner at Mama's Fish House in Maui, with a $50 gift cert, was $230 without the tip.
That's my fault though for ordering the Tristan Island Lobster.
What would be good though, and I did this recently, was make a batch of bulgogi and make some homemade kbbq tacos. Easier than finding the kogi truck!

don't get me wrong a nice restaurant with great ambiance is always a treat but what i was trying to get at is this, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a nice dinner. a lot of people (including myself) are on a recession budget, i was just giving Evan a middle dollar alternative with the same top dollar quality
I love the finer thing too!! but sometime great food does not have to come with big price tag....but usually for me it about $130 plus tip for sushi dinner for me and my friend....
Have you cooked for your friend? This goes for the OP also.
If you want the best BBQ ribs around L.A.(the memphis is outta this world), go to Baby Blues in Venice off of Lincoln... If you want one of the best damn burgers IMO, go to Father's Office in Santa Monica (gotta fight for seats though) or their other location near Culver City... These are places I love going to. YUM! If you want Japanese (not sushi or ramen), you can go to Lomita for some Okonomiyaki at Gajamoc... tastes just like in Osaka area! Yummy!
