Digital Camera Recommendations
So I'm in the market for a new digital camera and I'm really loving the new Leica D-Lux 4 but not loving the price.
I don't want a DSLR just yet. I don't want a regular old point and shoot either. The Leica seems to be the best of both worlds(like Jay-z and R. Kelly or Hanna Montana and Miley Cyrus!)
I've read some excellent reviews of it then some people say it's a horrible camera.
Thoughts?

Try a Canon G10
I didn't want to carry around something with the size of a DSLR but wanted the control and high resolution. I bought the Canon G10 in November and love it! IT takes super high 15 megapixel RAW images and is small enough to carry around on a vacation. The best part is that you don't have to worry about framing your shots because you can edit them later and crop them leaving very high resolution pictures.Look up reviews of the camera. It's only weak point is high resolution action pictures on a cloudy day or in a dark setting - it tends to fuzz a bit at 800 ASA setting and up.
Being a bit of a tech geek - I love the camera, all of its dials and infinite settings and its 350 page manual.
A warning though - do not use any of the unknown named stores on the internet offering you a deal price. I bought mine from Prestige Camera in NYC for an offered price of $381 (list is $499) and ended up getting charged $589.00. Before doing business with an internet shop that is new to you - type in their name and the word scam (prestige camera + scam).
I happen to really like JR.COM and 6thave.com. I should have bought it from them. I have since seen the camera regularly on sale for $420.00.

BH Photo
I have read good things about them but have never done business directly with them so I didn't want to reference the store.
During my reading of photo books it is the single store many Por's say is the best outlet for cameras.

i have a Nikon P80 P/S. i bought it as an introductory tool to photography and now i'm hoooked
... saving up to buy my first DSLR now
the Nikon P80 is a very good p/s IMO. pictures come out nice and crisp, convenient with low maintenance, nearly the same adjustable settings as a DSLR and at about half the price.
i'm still learning but here are a few shots i took with the camera at various settings - experimenting with aperture, iso, and light:

in this shot you can even see the pet hair trapped in the carpet fibers
... i vacuumed shortly after seeing this

orange sun, orange buildings, and cloudy skies.. the contrast in these pics didn't really compliment each other

<3

better lighting in these pics

non automotive shots

to get a better idea of how well people can shoot with the P80, i would recommend searching "Nikon P80" on flickr.com
good luck with your camera hunt!

i buy from them AALLL the time. They have great prices and they ship their stuff very well packaged. Not to mentione quick shipping and they're a pro store authorized to sell all of their stuff.
Wow - nice pics with the P80 for a fairly inexpensive camera
What is it about carpet? One of the first things I tried was taking a picture of carpet also.
Zooming in from 15 Megapixels was gross!
You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon. I have had both. The G10 is really just short of a DSLR. It is the point and shoot that pro's use as a backup and it is much more expensive.
How is the speed of starting up and taking the first and second picture with the Nikon? My first two digital cameras were Nikons and I stopped using them after the second one was too slow. I assume they changed that.
One very important purchase is the memory card - get a big one - I recommend the Sandisk Extreme III. It saves very fast allowing you take multiple pictures quickly.

I have a Canon SD870IS as my P&S when I dont wanna lug my DSLR. but its more of a nicer "consumer" camera than a pro's point and shoot like a G9/G10.
if u want a bad ass small/portable camera then a G9/G10 would be a awesome choice.

G10 FTW...I got one for my Father for Christmas and He just love it...and it great P&S camera and has all the features of a DSLR without the extra weight..... I highly recommend it!!

I think you will like the Sony H50, and its under $300 when I bought it last week at Best Buy. I already have a dslr, but I wanted something more portable and I didn't really want to spend that much. You can't go wrong getting this! :3
Here's some samples:

I usually use Aperture mode all the time and I try not to go below ISO400, unless I'm using my DSLR. Most of these shots are @ ISO100 / f/2.7 / +Sharpness and Vivid Mode, but the bird shots I had to zoom in so the aperture changed by itself to f/2.8-3.5. Every camera is different though so you wont get the same results, unless you buy the H50.
Its a nice DSLR-like compact camera and the shots I get are very close to the my more expensive dslr, so I'm pretty happy! :3
Here's another creepy feature that I like. It has a built-in Infrared light (aka Night vision) that can take this kind of photo in pitch black environment.

This is like the shit they used at those haunted tv shows! :3

My housemate just got the G10. It does live up to it's role as the middle ground between DSLR and P/S.
I personally shoot with a Nikon D40. I don't even want such high megapixels...at least for my purposes. I want crisp and sharp photos...but i never seem to print anything bigger than 5x7 prints or any prints at all. So storage is a nightmare with such a high resolution camera as the G10. Sure you could set the resolution down, but why do that? haha.
I also have a P/S sony DSC-w170. It was the top of the line sony p/s model released about a year ago. One gripe i have with sony is that their noise is a bit much to me, and looks quite strange when you do decide to edit it. the 170 i have is a 10.1 mp. Smile shutter is cool tho. It's really a conversation starter.
One major thing to consider when you do get a non-dslr camera to get one with a wide angle lens. Typically they are 28mm for p/s cameras. This will come in handy more than you think. If you can get one that has 28mm wide angle and 5x zoom, you will be set to take most common shots.
I highly recommend getting a canon point and shoot...in the end canon p/s seem to yield some of the best photos in so many different environments.
Here is an example of what my DSC-170 can do in a somewhat dimly lit room (this cloudy morning with shades mostly closed) and at full 5x zoom hand held on "easy" mode.

The G10 is Canon's current darling, but the older SX10 should not be overlooked. It is "only" 10 megapixels, but it has a 20x (yes, 20x) optical zoom. IMHO, that more than makes up for having only 10 MP. I finally decided to ditch my last film camera (even though I have a 20mm lens for it-- crazy wide shots), and I bought the SX10 for a trip to Death Valley this last weekend. The 20x zoom gives it an equivalent focal length range of 28-560mm. You can find it for less than $400. I looked at the G10, but I decided there wasn't that much difference in price from getting a Rebel XSi (12 MP DSLR). The SX10 will be my current Point & Shoot until I decide I can afford the XSi plus a 10-22mm zoom ($710 at Samys).
I got some *nice* pictures with the SX10. One of the cool features is a Super Macro mode-- the minimum distance to subject is 0cm (zero, really!). I got some great close-up shots of small flowers. It also did a good job (sitting on my monopod) of shooting the sand dunes after sunset.
The weak point of the SX10 is low light shots. Sometimes it can't figure out the focus, and it failed completely at taking pictures of the stars at night. However, in all other situations, it is some of the best bang for your buck that you will find.

How do you upload photo's? Is there a size limit?
Still like my G10 better everyday - the auto mode with face recognition has made some really good 'candid' shots while letting the camera hang from its strap abound my neck. With 15 mp I can crop the picture for a nicer framed shot later - same goes for some recent nature shots of birds in their nest - I held the camera over my head where I couldn't see the viewfinder and got amazing pictures.
I also like my 6mp Canon point and shoot. they start fast, focus fast and shoot repeat shots fast and clear. I had two Nikon's but they seem a bit slower.

AS for upload...you can use photobucket.com or flickr.com...and they usually resize the image to down...hope that help..LMK if you have any other pictures.
Personally I wouldn't get the G10, for the price range I would rather get a DSLR for less than $500 such as the Sony A200 or Olympus E-520.
Remember the bigger the sensor the better!
