Epic Pilgrimage...

The Ring is, quite simply, the ultimate driving experience. 13 miles and at least 73* bends add up to what even top racing drivers describe as the most demanding circuit in the world. It's impossible to describe just how good it is until you've been there, but if you can imagine your favourite mountain road and your favourite race-track, and combine the best bits of the two, you'll get the general idea. (*There are various different figures quoted, depending on what you count as a bend - look at the photo to get an idea of the difficulty of counting them - but the official number is 73.)

Built in 1925-1927, the Ring was designed as a dual-purpose test track and race circuit. When not being used for these purposes, it was made available for public access, a tradition that - thankfully - continues today.

It used to be the German Grand Prix circuit until Lauda's crash in 1976 ended its GP career. You can find out more about the history here. It is still heavily used as a manufacturers' test track today, and there are a few race events on it also (see this links page for details). But on many evenings and a few weekends a year it is made available for public use. Anyone can take their car or bike there and enjoy.

On May 8th, I will be driving on Nordschleife, aka The Nurburgring, aka "The Green Hell".

I can't wait.

long story short, my friend jake (more like a brother really) has family over there, and was planning on a trip. he invited me to come along, and so im goin (got my ticket last night).

i havent yet decided what i will drive yet, as its going to largely depend on how much cash i have when i go. whatever i drive will almost certainly be FR just cause thats where i have all of my experience. im looking at a peugeot 307, or a focus right now, with possibilities of a vw golf, bmw 1 series, or any of several choices. sadly, there are no rental places that i've seen that have the fit (jazz)

edit::if there are any fit freaks in germany that wanna let me borrow their car for a few hours, lemme know!!!

Rent a BMW but don't crash. It can rain and there are many accidents and deaths.

You can drive any speed and there are all sorts of buses, cars and motorcycles on the course throughout the day. Just pay your money and drive.

Studying the course and layout could help. Watching the videos on utube for inspiration could be helpful.

Bringing a rated M2005 or SA2005 helmet?

ahhh yes my dream track I would give a very important part of my body up to go drive on it in a 1960's mini....*sigh*
My grandmother tells me wonderful stories of it
I have watched tons of vids of it and love it on GT4 even (and its not even real !)
If I remember correctly its best to buy a few passes at once. I will try and find the article in one of my mags that tells how to go about driving on it...tips, prices, and what not.

look for the ring mini (its a mini clubman (in blue) with a honda swap in it maybe even 4WD he also has a blue mini pick-up)

Lucky you buddy....
I wish I could go....it would be a dream vacation...*looks up at the sky and starts daydreaming*
