Timing chain replacement question

Quick question:

Does the oil pan have to come off to replace the timing chain on a GD3?

I'm trying to make sure I have all the parts necessary before starting the job.

Thanks.

Hello BB3, how are you? Take a look at this video
Is that your engine? It is spoken in Portuguese, but the friend doesn't need to understand, just watch it. I think that there is no need to remove the oil pan to install the new chain. the crankshaft gear has to be pulled out to install the new chain. I hope I helped. If your engine isn't that one, I can try to find another one. Here in Brazil there are many Hondas of several generations and some videos are very useful.

That may be a different engine.

I haven't taken anything apart yet. But I found this photo on the web. It looks like the crank position sensor trigger sprocket will have to come off before the crank sprocket.
Looks like the oil pan is gonna have to go first.

Hello BB3. After searching for a while, I think there are several L15A engines for Honda FIT. I looked for videos about changing the timing chain but I haven't found anything yet to clarify your need. All the best.

I sure appreciate your efforts!

If I ever get around to replacing the chain, I will post back here and let you know what I find.

Hello BB3, If you need to remove the engine from the car to change the chain, the service will possibly become more complex and expensive, perhaps having to be carried out in a workshop. If I get a right tip for this service, I'll post it to the friend. All the best.

I'm pretty certain the pan would have to come off, but why are you changing the chain? Owners have gone 400k+ miles on the original chain.

Thanks for the reply. 320K on the existing chain. Starting to rattle a bit between 2600 and 3000 rpm.

Great answer! At that mileage, I can believe it. Not a bad lifespan.

As insane as this may sound, I wonder if it would be easier to put a "new" motor in it? I bought a 90k mile L15 from a local junk yard for $500.

Yeah, I'm on the fence about the whole project. I have bought a replacement GD3 already. Trying to patch this one up to sell. I know that even with the chain replaced, the ol girl just ain't worth that much. It's been a great car!
