2013 Giving us Problems - Coil Pack 3 Needs Replacing AGAIN!
2013 Honda Fit. First started giving us some problems in October when we drove down to Boston. It all of a sudden started sputtering and we limped it to a nearby mechanic for a code reader. It was a catalytic converter misfire and the mechanic said we are fine to continue driving it. It did the sputtering thing again once on the trip but overall it got us home okay. We brought it to the mechanic at home who found nothing needing repair.
Then a couple weeks later, same thing happened (engine sputtering, won't drive over 30 ish kmph) and our mechanic said it was the 3rd coil. We got that replaced and here we are a month or so later and the same exact problem is happening. My husband is in a town an hour away, same exact sputtering and barely driving, he brought it to a mechanic to code read it and the mechanic said its the 3rd coil again and that he should be fine to drive it home and that once he can start driving it faster on the highways it should be fine.
What could be causing the same coil to go, within a month? What are we missing here? Our local mechanic isn't the best so I want to have some information for them when we go. Any ideas? I've been reading to replace spark plugs and all the coils, as well as get a valve adjustment. Is this what we need to do? All that work will be very expensive - is any of this something my semi-handy husband can do? I believe the spark plugs are straight forward. Is that worth trying on its own or do we need to do all three of those things?
We really want to fix whatever is causing this as we live in a very rural area and being stranded out here in the winter is a big deal.

Just to update the thread - the spark plug had exploded through and taken out the coil. If the helicoil that is installed doesn't hold, the mechanic said the cheapest option would likely be an entire swap of the engine, he mentioned because of the head, not sure if he had to damage it to get the helicoil in or what.
From what I have researched this problem is at least somewhat common in the Fits. Really crappy thing to have happen for sure! Don't know where we'll get the money to swap engines but what can you do.

From what I recall that was a common problem on that generation of Fits. It ceased to be a problem when the re-designed new GK version was released for 2015. You can do a search on this and see if any other solutions to the problem were found.
