Hardened Bug Residue

I haven't had many chances to get the bug guts off of my car. So what is on there has had some time to harden. Today I decided to do something about it and I had zero success using the following products:

The Turtle Wax Bug & Tar products didn't even make a dent on removing the bug residue. The ICE Clay Bar seemed to take a little bit of the residue off, but didn't do much. Is there any other product that might be able to help with removing hardened bug residue? I have read about peanut butter, citrus cleaner, lacquer thinner, and rubbing alcohol, but I do not want to try them without some further insight. It looks like I will need something that will remain on the spot to soften the residue and will not mess with the paint of the vehicle.

really? The turtle wax works very well 4 me.
instead of following the directions on the bottle, I spray it on the car before washing and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Cleans and shines!

dude don't use any of those products. U want the best?! get THE TARMINATOR BABY!!! (cue Terminator music) I use the tarminator for all kinds of grime and man it just eats it alive! I love stoner's brand car cleaner care kits. I have all 3, invisible glass (For windows), the tarminator (for bugs n grime) and more shine (for the tires). I absolutely love em! Check out the comparison video also!

Watch video footage of how Stoner Tarminator removes tar faster then three leading brands of bug and tar removers.

Ugh! Of course I would have already gone through $30 worth of sh*t before I find a reasonable answer. The video looks real good for tar, but this bug residue is freaking killing me! I am going to hit up a NAPA later today and get Tarminator.

Well, I bought a can of Tarminator from NAPA today and it wasn't able to remove the residue. I applied it directly to the hood and let it sit for five minutes. I thought it was working but once I wiped everything off the dead bugs won again. I am at a loss. I guess my next step is to try a more abrasive approach. I found this:

NO NO NO! U don't want to use that....look into detailing products that have an abrasive in them like what detailers use.

What are you talking about??

That product is safe to use it wont harm your finish at all.

Just make sure to use it with some nice soapy solution.

I use that bug sponge on all our cars and not one has had damage from it.

Try it its worth the $5 to have it and if you use it with the tarminator it should take off the bugs.

If not PM me with a pic and ill see if i can help further.

I bought another cleaner and tried the Pinnacle Safe Scrub and still had no success. I quit. Here is what the hood still looks like.

Something just isnt right with that bug residue. Post a pic when its sunny out so i can see what the bugs look like, i cant really make it out in that night pic. I have a few things i could send you a small sample of that might work if i can see what we are working with.

After going to the dealership to deal with my paint issues I re-examined my paint and it appears that the bug guts are gone, but they have eaten through the paint. I noted in a couple other threads that I learned today from the service rep that there is no clear coat on our Fits. So, protect yourself!

first step in dealing with bugs is prevention...meaning, you need to have a decent coat of wax on there at all times.

try some Wizard's BugRelease. you just spray it on right after your
initial wet-down during a wash. let it work itself for a min or two.
by the time you make a pass with your wash mitt, it is nice and
soft and will easily come off.

try some spray-on type wax frequently on the front bumper if you
drive longer distance in bug season. here's some good ones:

Detailers Paradise: Premium Car Care Products, Auto Detailing Prima Hydro
Griot's Garage 1-800-345-5789 - Car Care for the Perfectionist SprayOn wax (does not last as long as Hydro).

I had the same problem with sap on my rsx. It stained the clearcoat or something so it looked like there were sap drops on it but there weren't.

I bought some meguiars bug/tar wipes that get that crap off right away. Only problem is that you have to add some wax to it afterwards because it takes it off.
