redlining too fast...

I was on my way to go get my oil changed at my friends shop today. I was merging onto the parkway when my gears started to act really funny...i wasnt flooring it but the rpms were raising way too fast(my foot also wasnt on the clutch). i merged onto the parkway every gear was doing it. got up close to 75 mph and was almost hitting the rev limiter, layed off of the gas went down to 60 then back up to 75 same deal. pulled over, restarted the car. same thing happened. so i kept it at 60 the rest of the way. also was making a load whistling sound(if any of you are contractors...you know the sound an extension ladder makes when you got it ont he top of your van with the wind blowing into the holes...or may be for those of you who arent...like blowing air onto the top of a beer bottle. i checked my fluids, my cai is my only mod, thats doing fine. the only thing that comes to mind is that ive had 1 oil change so far and it was with 10w30 not 5w20 , its been in there for about 5k.(dont think it would do that though? thought 10w30 was okay, dont plan on continuing using it, the shop did it on accident)

any ideas?

Dont tell them you just changed the oil, and dont tell them you run 10w30.
Using that oil weight would give dealerships a good reason to void the warranty covering motor problems.

Id also suggest going back to 5w20-5w30. Oil has nothing to do with this problem though. Sounds like the clutch is slipping.

yeah looks to be a like a slipping clutch to me too, i don't know about that whistling sound though. and i don't know why your clutch would be slipping either. best thing is to take it in like the above posters suggested.

i would say yes just so they won't have something to give you a hard time about. i don't see how the CAI could have caused any problems unless you installed it horribly wrong haha, but the dealer might be an a$$ and try to make something of it. so i would just take it off.

+1 !!!

and its probably a good idea to return it to stock, where applicable. Then test it again to give the mechanic a good idea of the issue.

Have you tried the car in reverse (if it is smooth then your clutch is definately slippin) Haaha! j/k

Seriously though when you more or less dump the clutch does it immediately grab (try at slower speeds) or does it hesitate?

Keep us posted on any findings...

Oh and one more thing is it worse when the car has warmed up a bit?

good luck... your x-mas gift may be the proper application of a warranty...

Id suggest taking off the intake also. I dont think they would void warranty over that, but you never know. They might say the intake gave crazy amounts of added HP and caused the clutch to slip.

You have 5000miles? and the clutch is slipping? I just hope that they will actually warranty that though. The clutch is a wear item, even if it is 5000miles.

Whats your mileage?

Hum, ok, so it happen right after the oil change ?
5k is way too soon for a new clutch... Maybe they
overfill the motor oil ??? this means this oil goes right
onto the flywheel and the face of the clutch disc.
(leaky seal...) That could explain slippin clutch...

Before going to the dealer, check cold oil level... on
a level surface...

i have around 9,200 miles on the car. my first oil changed was around 5k. i havent had an oil change since then(i was on my way to get it done today but forgot my oil/filter at home) last time i checked the oil it was way above the add line, but iwill check again on a level surface with the engine cold.

im not sure if its worse when the car is warmed up. i always let the car warm up completely before driving. i will try dumping the clutch and see how it does in lower gears. will post back.

one thing though. after i posted this thread i went out to move my car to another spot down the street(i was double parked) and it shifted fine, sounded fine, drove it around the block everything was good.

i did shift really badly last week when it was raining, some lady cut me off when i was making a turn, my wheels started to spin and my speedometer went up to 60mph but i wasnt going that fast...mis shifted a few times, had an awful odor for the next couple hours.(guessing that is the heat plate burning up?)

Using 10-30 oil will NOT void your warranty. It's perfectly fine to use it but your mileage may suffer minutely.

Was the clutch engaged? The only reason it would smell is if the clutch was engaged and slipping at that time. And yes, its a nasty smell.

I wasnt saying it would, it does give the dealer a reason to pester you though. Just like changing the oil before the 600mile break in crap.

it trys to grab but hits revs slow and accelerates slow for a second or 2 then jumps up and hits the rev limiter early haha did i do it wrong? (the way i did it worked fine in higher gears and fine before it started acting up)

im pretty sure its the clutch, is my first manual car. took me a couple months to get to shifting properly. i wouldnt think that 5k miles of riding on the clutch here and there and a few bad shifts would be this bad though.

Theres the problem. BTW, I dont think they will warranty your clutch at almost 10,000miles
Good luck. :-/

Someone posted the cost of the clutch and labor. Roughly $1000.

i don't know if you do this but i'll just give you my advice anyway, in case you did.

when you're in gear, keep your left foot off the clutch, on the floor. don't gently rest your foot on it or anything. if you have been doing this it could have caused some premature clutch wear too, if that is what the problem turns out to be.

na dont rest my foot on it. ive missed the gears probably like 10 times tho all together(when it grinds/vibrates real bad from the clutch not being pushed down all the way i guess).

Please bring your car in and get the clutch checked out before you are completely stranded on the highway or something. Dumping the clutch on an already weakened clutch is just asking for trouble. Drive any longer, you may damage your flywheel too. Clutch + Flywheel + Labour = $$$$$.

Always learn standard on someone else's car
