K&N Drop-in Air Filter

I was just wondering if anyone uses one of these in their Fit. I did a couple of serches and this forum said 0 results. I'm pretty surprised about that...
I had used one in my old camry and it worked pretty well. Nothing special in particular though.

I had one in my mt for about 15k miles, when i first put it in i noticed a little difference in response and the butt dyno felt some noticeable gains. it really lets the motor breath a lot better. good first upgrade if looking to retain the warranty and u just need to oil them every couple thousand miles.. but eventually i wanted more and i currently rock a fujita cai. def a good filter tho. worth the 40 bucks i paid.

Any filter that relies on oil for filtration will make more power.
It will also allow more crap to get by.

Cool thanks. I managed to find that thread after a bit of manual searching...hehe.
I'll probably just get the K&N. I have had the SRI Lead Foot Syndrome before..
And I'm also under Honda's extended protection plan and would rather keep as many parts as stock/carb legal as possible.

I also understand that higher flow air filters tend to let more crap in, but I haven't found that to be an issue in the past for me - so long as you keep it properly cleaned, oiled and overall maintained.

I got one back in June of this year. K&N Part 33-2359. Since I am not a performance junkie I never really paid attention to see if it improved the cars power. I will say that I got an extra 1mpg, which may be due to the engine finally breaking in, or the filter. I bought it because I have used their products before and am happy with it being reusable.

Look for one on ebay. There is a seller that has a BEST OFFER option, got one for 35 shipped. Also oiling the filter every few thousand miles is overkill and a waste of money. Unless you live in the middle of the desert, clean and re-oil it once a year and you will be perfectly fine.

i use to buy those drop-in filters for my commuters back in the days,
but i never really saw the benefit other than it being cleanable.

and majority of my cars are sold before they reach 40k which means
it will see only 2 air filter changes... $15-$20 is cheaper than a drop-in.

loss in throttle response

I actually bought one of the KN filters for my fit and noticed a big loss in throttle response. It wasn't as peppy and felt sluggish, so i returned it. Not sure why this was the case.

You must not have disconnected the battery for 15+ minutes when you did the installation. What this does is it does a light reset on the car's computer so it returns it back to a default mode where it'll quickly adapt to the higher air flow it now has. With more air, and the same amount of fuel, you would be running a bit leaner than usual, which would be a reason you felt less response.

I actually just bought mine, and reset my ecu, and the car actually drives better than new. I've been somewhat pushing the car to see how low i can push the MPG, so the computer adapted to my lead foot driving and wouldnt drive smoothly when driven in a more civilized manner.

SO with the new filter, pumped up tires, reset computer, and soon some premium fuel, i'll see how many MPG's i can get out of this autobox. =)

I bought mine for 42+ tax, but it comes with the free recharge kit.

Any update on mpg after reset?

I just installed mine today. Didn't notice any power since I never punch the throttle, but I DID notice that the car accelerates more smoothly. Seems as if it "breathes" better. I'm pretty sure it's not in my head as many would think.

Before the K&N, going up a hill the car always downshifted and you could feel every shift. Now the Fit seems to take hills better and is able to stay in a higher gear. I didn't do the battery reset. I'll see if my mpg changes before I do so.

Even if you do not do a battery reset, the computer will relearn the difference over time, which is not all that different anyway. I have not gotten any difference in mpg with mine, nothing noticeable at least.

I havent gotten a chance to drive the highway. I barely drove this week after the changes. FE has been somewhat poor from what i'ms eeing with miles compared with where the needle is at on my fuel gauge, but that was always typical of city driving and with a/c.
The car is way smoother. Perhaps somewould say its less responsive...but i feel it was way too sensitive.
I only wish the brakes were a bit less sensitive when they're cold.

I will try to do an update later on.

I am behind the times with you pro Freakers. I did catch and read some positive things about the SSI Super Sucker from H-fFt and ordered one. It will arrive in 2 days now. My question is What will this do to the warrenty? I sure hope it is OK as I hate to change back to OEM each time I go for service! Anyone out there have any good picture of how they installed their SSI? Thanks again everone.

i have a k&n drop in filter. it has no performance benefit over a stock filter. i bought mine because itll last forever. never needs replacement. just clean/re-oil it every 30k miles

I'm happy with it, other than it fits upside-down and the lack of indicated direction (it probably doesn't matter, but how do you know it's the same orientation after cleaning?).

I have faith in my butt dyno:

Upper rpm power, say 6000 plus rpm, is pretty much stock or perhaps a little weaker from the reduced media surface area. So no, peak power isn't going to be much different. However it seems to make up for it everywhere before there. It seems to really respond to the airbox resonance at ~4500 rpm much more than the stocker. I did the double resonator block-off with both the stock filter and k&n, and reverted to stock configuration multiple times, and the differences at the resonance speeds (2k-3k, 4.5k-5.5k) was much more pronounced with the k&n.

With the oem filter I was shifting at near redline in every gear if I wanted to get with the program, but with the k&n I only redline in 1st (blasted wide ratio!) and stick to 6000-6200 rpm or so for the rest of the changes, and still it's a bit quicker than before. It makes 75 mph on the on ramp about as fast as the old EJ8. Actually I think it's a tad faster, the civic took near the whole ramp on #55 but the GD3 is done a good 100' before that, so that's good enough for me.

As for those that say you can't hear it.... bull CRAP. It sounds GOOD. (I've had an SRI on this car, that's loud, but this is more refined yet definitely audible.)

And what's with honda's filter price? It was only about a $15 extra for a drop-in compared to them.
