K&N Drop-in Air Filter
#21
oh ok well i can give an update.
Driving 200 miles through thick dirt/debris storm sure broke in my filter. It did a good job of filtering, at least the bottom half compared to the top half of the air box was complete black and white difference. Being that the intake side was completely coated in thick dust and the throttle side was clean.
I really had a tough time calculating a good average mpg due to a VERY heavy headwind driving through the dust storms. However, when it was clear and i cleaned out the filter box and just banged the filter on the ground to loosen up debris...i drove 400 miles, and sped most of them. Usually following some huge suv or truck (tundra/durango/range rover). We would easily be going 85+ and at times be crusing for stretches driving at 100mph. I was expecting terrible FE...but in fact even with the speeding i managed a nice 35mpg. Heck thats way better than driving in the city. I had my A/C on too.
And for those of you interested...driving on flat ground with a bit of a breeze the fit really tops out at about 115 mph. My gps clocked me at 113 and i already felt the car really coudnt go any faster. Maybe MAYBE 120 with the a/c off...haha
No real performance changes with the filter. Its worthwhile because its cleanable and should last as long as i decide to keep the car, which is at least 50K/4 years.
On another note...when driving 75mph on the highway and a fairly large tumble weed rolls in front of you and you cant swerve to avoid it...you'll end up having branches and crap stuck all up in your grill and other parts of the car that will take you a while to clean out. Also if you hit it in the right place...as i did, you'll end up breaking the fog light fillament.

highest i've ever calculated was 38.
I'm not obsessed with getting high mpg. If i get within the average stated by the epa i am satisfied, because thats what i paid for. If i wanted higher mpg i could have opted for a civic or for a hybrid of some sort.

Granted i'd love to see High mpg...anyone would. I'm happy you're able to see my view...unlike a few other hard headed individuals. Although we aren't in the eco section! haha

Damn, no real changes with my filter. Got 31mpg driving to Irvine and back one day and I was doing only about 80mph. Every other time my fillups have been around 28mpg and it pisses me off so bad!

I'd be happy to get 380 miles per full tank!

I typically drive 75% city and with that, i'll hit about 150 miles at the midpoint. Driving mostly city i'll average about 26-30 mpg when i fill up about 8 gallons of fuel. The reason for that huge range is because sometimes i'll make a ton of short trips, floor it a lot because i want to, or very poor weather/traffic conditions. Of course there are other times i'll baby it.
My car is pretty much stock in terms of aerodynamics and the OE tires are pumped up to about 50psi cold.
Driving highway is a different story. I'll hit about 200 miles at the half full mark driving above 80mph. Of course thats with pretty optimal weather and road conditions.
Again, as long as you're getting the current epa ratings, you should not be pissed off...unless you're just pissed off at yourself hehe.

As long as everyone realizes that a K&N will pass more dirt into the engine. And the oil.
I stopped using these filters on my FJ40 for this reason.
Maybe read this.

K &N drop in.
I think Polaski was wondering how you know which way is up when you remove K & N drop in filter. There are (I think) 4 numbers stamped into the rubber on the side of the filter that you want to be down. At least there was on mine. I pulled my drop in and installed a SSI. Now I search for a nice muffler. Nice not rice. Better flow through than OEM but still relatively quiet. Hope I didn't jump thread or whatever it is called?
