oil filter, honda vs fram extended vs purone?

I went to walmart and used their computer to look up a filter for the fit. The only model that showed up was a Fram Extended guard. The box says it lasts 10k miles and 26 grams of dirt.

On my purlator purone it says it hold 13 grams.

I'm curious to see if anyone knows how many grams the Honda filter holds?

If you're looking for filter at walmart, get the Super-tech. It's made by the same company (Champion) that makes STP filters. ST7714 or something, I forget the exact number, but it should pop up on the walmart filter finding computer.

I have opened a Honeywell unit:

Not impressed. The old filters (Toki Roki?) were great but these are not what I like.
I have been using the Purolators for years and I have seen them taken appart; great filters.

If you look at the research Fram is never a good filter. I use PureOne, Wix is good too, as is Mobile One.

SuperTech oil filters at WalMart are a great value!

I use them for all my vehicles, and never had any problems.

Yup, made by Champion as stated in earlier post. Dirt cheap at walmart, same number as the fram filters just different letters at the front of the number.

Nothing. It's just that the SuperTech oil filters at Walmart are cheaper and work just as well.

Nothing's wrong with them. The ones marked Honeywell just Frams painted blue. The Filtech ones are better.

No question, the Filtechs were better.

But the Honeywell (Fram) filters made for Honda are more like the ToughGuard line than the cheap orange cans.

Honda filters are not that expensive especially when bought 6 at a time from places like H & A Accessories or Bernardi Honda. Bernardi even throws in the crush washers...

PS the small size of the Honda filters allow you to put more of them on your shelf!

I've been buying the 6 packs from Bernardi for my '05 Cr-V - One nice thing about the filters (whichever you choose) is the wide variety of vehicles they fit. Like I said I have a CRV.... my bro in law (who I do oil changes for) has 2 CRV'S as well. Now I have an '09 fit and the same filter fits all of them......

Any thought on the K&N oil filters?

I think STAYALERT should buy the 30-filter pack that Bernardo sells.

K&N makes nice filters. Nice thing they have is the nut welded to the end for installation and removal.

But remember, Honda says their filter will last two oil changes! This has been verified by the folks at BITOG...someone cut open a 20K mile filter and it wasn't totally plugged.

Whoa people. They OP is talking specifically about the Fram Extended Guard Filters. Fram EXTENDED GUARD filters are actually VERY GOOD and have nothing in common with their cheaper brethren. They have an extremely robust construction. The pleats are backed by a wire mesh and the filter media is very thick.

I don't know how the compare to the Purolator PureOne or whatever the compatable offering is from Wix, but I would say, from taking apart both, the Extended Guard is pretty tough.

Now, the question is value. Do you NEED an Extended Guard for $8-9? I've had great success with the Supertech filters. That's pretty much all I buy. They hold up for any interval I'd care to run. I've had them on for at least 7k miles in my CR-V. The Fit isn't some sort of oil-killer. You're not going to throw anything at a Supertech that it can't handle.

That's only because the little information thingie mounted on the WM shelves said that was the only thing they sold for the Fit.

There are LOTS more choices.

Yes, I have used Supertech myself without issues. Are they still less than $3 US? (Lately I've been buying the factory filters)

Right. There are plenty of choices. But very quickly as soon as Fram was mentioned there was a half-informed reaction that Fram=bad. The Extended Guard is quite good if not the best filter that you can buy for the money.

Regarding changing the filter every other oil change, every indication I've seen so far indicates this engine is gentle on oil. There shouldn't be any problem. I know in my k24-based CR-V, there was never a single visible particle in any filter I ever cracked open. I'm also heeding Honda's advice on my Odyssey as well. No need to waste a perfectly good filter.

I've been using PureOne or FramXG on my Ridgeline (and Pilot before that) based on the cut-away analysis floating around out there somewhere.

Once the new FIT is in the garage (after the XJ gets sacrificed for cash-for-clunkers) I'll be using the same on it.

Personally i use Wix (NAPA Gold!) or K&N Filters depending on disponibility with AMSoil 0w20 or Red Line 5w20 again depending on.... I kinda got used to 5k kilometer OCI so using good quality filters and oil for those 13k to 15k OCI in the Fit makes me feel better actually...

Marko!!
