Missing Dipstick and Cap

I got my oil changed about 6 months ago and I went into Honda for a recall on my Honda Fit 2007. They noticed that I'm missing my dipstick and cap. I doubt the oil change place can help me since 6 months have passed. Anyone know how much it would be to replace it and where to get the part # and the part? I called the dealership and they quoted me $30 which seems a lot for just a cap & dipstick. Thanks!

you have been driving for 6 months without a dipstick and oil cap? Honda then let you drive the car away without those items?

Your first mistake was being dumb enough to drive your car without popping the hood for 6 months.

Sigh...

Hmmm? You turn the cap to the right. Dipstick easier... just stick it in the hole. Reference your manual for detailed instructions.

I thought you said Honda has them for $30. Well there is your answer or did you want free ones?

Oh and never, never open the hood. Bad things can happen. Your cap and dipstick were not missing until you opened the hood.

If I was such an expert on cars, I wouldn't have to come to this forum. I'm sure I can put the cap on if I have the part, but I don't have it yet. I want to order it. So my questions are:
1. Do the cap and dipstick come together or are they 2 separate items with 2 different part #?
2. What is the average price for it?

They are seperate. The Avg price is $30. GO BUY THEM NOW. Without the oil cap setiments and dirt can get INSIDE your motor. If you have been driving without them your engine would be COVERED in oil unless there is no oil in it. Im surprised Honda let you drive the car away without those items. you need them now. Quit being a cheap ass and go to honda and buy them. These items are important. DO NOT drive your car WITHOUT these items.

JDMchris is absolutely right in his warnings. But after you replace the missing items, you should also immediately get your oil changed AGAIN to get rid of the dirt and moisture that has entered the engine through the missing cap fill hole. But don't go to the same dealer, and don't drive away from the new dealer or repair shop unless you have opened the hood and can see the dip stick and can feel that the oil cap is tight.

You obviously need as much help as you can get. If you can't afford to buy a new oil cap from a dealer or parts store, send me $5.30 through Pay Pal for Priority Mail postage, and I will GIVE you a spare GD3 oil cap left over from my wrecked first Fit. But it would be a mistake to keep driving for another minute with the oil cap missing.

I would change the oil with a good synthetic too. I am surprised she didn't smell oil because the timing chain is right there and would throw oil out.

Thanks Wen-Li. The cap will be at your door on Monday.

All of the self-important little boys can stop dumping on the OP. She's a student at UC Irvine and has never owned a car before. Which makes her a perfect target for crooked and stupid Honda dealers who forget to replace critical parts, and let her drive away knowing that the critical parts are missing.

No bashing here. It might of just fell off or someone took them because 6 months of it not being on would have had symptoms that would have made her question them sooner.

She drives the car once a week, and keeps it in a garage. Without any kind of car experience, it is easy to understand her lack of basic knowledge. It is also lucky for her that the extremely low use has kept any major symptoms from showing up. She might skate by with no damage at all, and has probably learned a big lesson------

Check under the hood frequently, and ALWAYS immediately after ANY service has been done. Always insist on being given any "defective" parts that have been "replaced".

My guess is that someone took them, because when you take a dipstick out why would you do anything with it other than put it back in? It's not like the gas cap that you put down somewhere while you add oil. The dipstick would never leave your hand.

So, to the OP- have you lent your car to anyone? Or left it unlocked somewhere? Or left it with a valet?

In any case DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR without an oil cap.

Dealership service people forget to replace oil caps frequently. I know 3 people who got dealer oil changes and saw oil puddles in their driveway after returning home. All were missing the oil cap when they looked under the hood, but all found the problem the same day that the service was done. All received free service coupons or other crap as apologies from the dealership who was responsible.

However, why a service person would lay a dip stick aside and forget to replace it is a real mystery. Just another reminder not to let strangers do simple work on your car, and always LOOK over the work that you paid for. Expect problems and be ready to solve them yourself, and quickly.
