ac/heat vent control

I have the 08 Fit (base) and can no longer change the ac/heater vent. The control is just below the radio on the right and only moves about a 1/2" right or left & feels very "spongy". So what I would like to know is, is this the control assembly that is bad or the cable attached to this controller? I would like to get a general idea of what’s going on here before I start ordering parts & tearing into this thing.

Thanks for any help y'all can give,
Brian

there are 3 cables that go from the dials to the back of the dash...behind/next to the glove box.

drop teh glove box down and follow teh cables (i think they are purple, orange..adn i foget teh other color). they jsut have a little loop over a pin at teh end...when the dial turns the pin is pulled or pushed to adjust whatever your trying to change. make sure they are connected well.
