Headlight Restoration: Easy and Proper

Hi Everyone,

I specifically made this thread, so fellow forum buddies do not waste their precious money on useless "headlight restoration" kits. I use a very simple procedure on the majority of my headlight restorations, and they do not involve SANDING. However, if the acrylic lenses are in too bad of shape....sanding is necessary.

Products Used:
PCXP 7424 Orbital Polisher
Orange and White Lake Country CCS 5.5in Pads
Menzerna Power Gloss (Compound)
Menzerna Super Finish (Polish)

It is unfortunate that most companies produce a simple compound and polish and market it as a headlight restoration kit. You need a simple Liquid Compound and Less Abrasive Polish, and below are the results you can expect.

Thanks for the write-up. Saved for future use as I can tell that my lights will be needing this in the future. This is also a good time to pick up a new orbital polisher and new pads.

Glad I could assist you, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Also, I suggest picking up a Porter Cable 7424xp orbital polisher.

Ya but how much are those orbitals? I bought a "headlight restoration" kit off of amazon for 10 bucks. Works great and they give you enough to last a few years. Not that i care now since i bought my new fit. Not to put a downer on your thread, but some peeps don't have the $ for a decent orbital.

In most cases, sanding your headlight lenses is absolutely unnecessary, so you can polish out the oxidation and fine imperfections with a orbital. The machine is not expensive; however, I would not use a 10 dollar headlight restoration kit on any of my clients vehicles. They do not produce the results a machine is capable of. To answer your question... They can hire a professional detailer to properly restore their headlights for 50-70 dollars. I have tried almost every kit available to consumers, and they clearly do not produce the results of a rotary or orbital buffer. After sanding the headlights you need to refine them further with a micro abrasive polish.

If they are really strapped for money they can purchase the headlight restoration kit and do it themselves, but it will not yield extremely good results.

The Porter Cable is $130.00, so if you cannot afford it have someone perform the service.
