DIY Cold air?

Hey guys, one of my friends mentioned autozones DIY coldair intake system...it involves a kit that has plastic test pieces to figure out what real pieces you will need, and then you go in and buy the pieces you need to build it...im thinking of trying this out on my AT sport. Has anyone ever tried this, either on our cars or on any others...im looking for pros and cons on this so i know if its just a bad idea or not

thanks everyone =D

if you're doing a diy, i don't think you would need a kit for it
just find a shop that sells mandrel bent exhaust piping
or get an exhaust shop to do it and weld everything together

that's how i did my charge pipes on my turbo crx

there in lies the problem, i dont know how to weld, and dont have the equipment to even attempt it. and none of my friends to either. the kit comes with adapters and clamps to hold pieces together, rather than welding

The intake for the Fit is 2.5" and the kits you're talking about are 3" for one thing, at least that's what I saw when I was considering it. The 90 degree comming off the manifold probibly wont work since it will hit the battery because of the added size.

To make your own you can get some 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust tubing from jegs.com and cut it with a hacksaw, drill a couple holes and put it together with some 2" rubber coupling from Home Depot. I used the 304 stainless.

For that matter mine will go up for sale once I get the super charger from Jackson Racing.

You can get an idea of how it looks in the thread I did on the heatshield for it here https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-photos-videos/8783-my-cai-heatshield.html.

There are some more pics of it here https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-engine-modifications-motor-swaps-ecu-tuning/8180-obx-ss-racing-header-07-fit-1-5l.html since I was doing it at the same time I did the headers.

A CAI can be for both automatics and manuals it makes no difference what transmission you have. The only thing with an auto. is that there may be other things in the way. I have a M/T so I don't know if there's anything in the way in an A/T or not.

$145 (?) for the Aspec cold air. Makes noise, makes power, and looks great.
I love mine!

90 degree bend does fit. heres a picture of mine. But it's a SRI. Not much space for CAI. I couldn't find room to make it so SRI it is.

hmmm... this is not the first time i hear it mentioned. i actually wanted to post a question but now i might as well ask about it here.

could you explain why cold air intake is for manual only? so far from what i read it looks like the gain in power is not that significant so there should not be that much more strain on AT. or is it AT confusing shift points? why manual only?

generally, you would want to use ALUMINUM piping for intakes. steel is heavy and bulky, also rust-prone. ebay has aluminum IC piping you can buy. or call fast-turbo.com. they sell individual pipes and couplers/reducers if u're serious on making one urself.

but i'd say too much work and hassle.

The AT transmission is in the way. If you look down in a AT fit, there's no room. I can take pictures for you if you want me to..

didn't realise they are that different! oh well, i'm not planning any engine mods yet anyways. for me pics of AT are not needed since i can just open my hood, but maybe someone else will need refference. thanks

Cool glad it worked. Looks good too. Now we know the kits will fit.
