What gauges do I need to go with a Turbo?

Ok, so I'm ordering a Turbo. What gauges are a necessity? I know I'm getting an Apexi avc-r II and Apexi turbo timer. But what else do I need to go with it? Help from anyone please

A boost gauge would be pretty helpful. Otherwise it all depends on what gauge pod your gonna get. There are a whole bunch of gauges you could get. Air/fuel ratio (not really needed but cool) Oil temp, Water temp, Oil pressure, Voltage, Exhaust pressure........ I would stick with boost, water temp, and oil pressure but thats my opinion. Its all up to what you want to keep tabs on. How are you gonna mount the gauges and how many are you gonna get?

The APEX-i turbo timer has a built in A/F & voltmeter guage when you connect it to the ECU's O2 sensor/acc power. The AVCR has a boost/vac gauge aswell. However, I'd highly suggest getting a mechanical boost/vac and an external electrical oil pressure gauge to make sure the readings are exact.

I was thinking of getting 2 gauges tops but sometimes it seems like I need more. I want a boost gauge and the oil pressure for sure. Water temp would be helpful and oil temp as well. To me thats just too many gauges to put up. it's hard to think of a place to mount it and keeping the dash looking good. If it was just 2 gauges I need then I can figure out a place for it.

If your looking for a clean instal for gauges i found this H-Fit.com...Upcoming Parts...Coming Soon.... I dont know when its comming out but it is gonna be made for the fit and its the only one that i have found. Other then the din pod that goes in the dash if you instal a single din radio and get rid of the oe. Hope this helps. I can find pics of the dash din pod if you need them too.

That's a cool find. But I don't want anything new above my a/c area. If the gauges are small enough, I can mod the cluster and a little bit above the area to fit 2 gauges. It'll be a custom look instead of an add-on.

If it's a turbo kit and you don't have to retune i would just get a boost gauge to see if you you have any boost creep or boost spikes so you won't blow your motor.
get an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on your oil pressure so you won't starve the turbo of oil( not really needed)
If you are planning on retuning or really want to be on the safe side of nto blowing your motor get a WIDEBAND CONTROLLER it's super accurate and really nice to have. a/f gauges are just crap they don't really do anything but look cool.
One more thing that would be nice to have is a Pyrometer egt sensor. you can keep an eye on egt's so you won't over heat your turbo. ( it's nice to have when you tune your ignition map)
the only one that you really need is the boost gauge if it's a street car. all the the gauges i named above is nice to have but not necessary.
and remember... gauges are not for looking cool, they are there to monitor you engine to keep it safe and healthy

*'BOOST' gauge is a pressure gauge that measures pressure (and, usually, vacuum) at the intake manifold. Ordinary vehicles only ever have vacuum at this location, as the engine attempts to suck in air. Turbocharged and supercharged vehicles pressurize the intake manifold by pushing in extra air. The intake pressure is referred to as 'boost'. If the turbo is not set up correctly, it will push in more air than the engine can handle. This usually leads to a 'lean' condition - too much air, not enough fuel - which directly results in excessively high combustion temperatures and severe engine damage.

*'EGT' gauge measures (ahem) exhaust gas temperature. This reading is directly related to the internal combustion temperature of the engine, and indirectly related to the quality of the air/fuel mixture entering the engine.
The principle is obvious: if the engine gets too hot inside, parts melt. While other gauges can give an indirect indication, only an EGT can give a direct indication that the engine is operating correctly.

I had run across this information online. These should be the two immediate gauges you will need! These are the first two I had on my GTI. Hope this helps.. GOOD LUCK

I just want to keep gauges to a minimul so people don't try to break into my car because they see a tach or something of the sort. People around where I live are a bunch of troublemakers. I don't have a garage to keep my car in so I'd like to stay stealthy as possible inside the car. Which would be more useful? The Oil Pressure gauge or the Exhaust Gas gauge?

If it has to be one, you need the boost gauge. You want to make sure you are getting what you are paying for....as far as boost plus it can help save your turbo system if it starts over boosting. In addition you will be able to notice vac leaks, which are notorious on turbo's....hope this helps.

you can mount at least 5 guages( not that you need to) in your glove box, open it when you drive. close it when you park.

I've already thought of that. I don't want to have it open if I am driving someone. Thanks for the thought.

If you get them will you know what you're looking at and what it means?

If not, then just get the gauge pod that looks the best to you and fill it with whatever gauges light up in the color you want.
